  • OnPoint: Lies, damn lies, adjectives,

What I meant is that even if just a small portion of renters could afford to buy, their ability to go "no, piss off" has the ability to drive rent down across the board.

But if that portion of renters move out of the rental market, then so does an equal portion of rental housing, leaving the supply/demand balance the same, no?

Landlords will have to pay tax - and may try to pass it on to renters - but at the same time, property prices will fall, making purchasing more viable

But then wouldn't that mean less rental property available, and therefore further upward pressure on rental housing pricing?

  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

National standards aren't about helping underachieving students...

    That's the sad truth.

If it were, the govt. could fairly accurately map achievement against a range of socio-economic (and other) factors in order to best target help.

Unfortunately, this would require both a lot of spending and spending on largely non-National-supporting groups.

if you want to call me a partisan hypocrite don't be a passive-aggressive smart alec about it.

Hey, just reminding you that it goes both ways.

A majority of readers - 56.3 per cent - believed the system would create "league tables"...

We can fairly say that at least 56.3% of Herald readers surveyed do not have a clue what they're on about. Nowhere in the government information about standards does it say that the system will "create league tables". Indeed, the people tasked with making it work are desperate that it not do so.

    It will happen here.

With respect, these statements seem at odds. Could you clarify?

Between 40 and 60 per cent?

Greedy pricks. If it was up to me, I'd advise Men At Work to have a very good look at old Irish and Scottish folk tunes; there's a reasonable chance, IMO, that you'd find that riff.

    'It's Choade My Dear'

    That's quite a title.

you know who you are, Harvey Norman

    Seriously, those should be illegal.

In fact, I think I did read something a month or two back about authorities in the US proposing (or considering) some sort of ban on such "intrusive" TV advertising.

advertising people, where cool is king

Really? Then how come the ads themselves are mostly so, so naff.

I reckon it's pretty easy to figure out that at least 29,000 of that 30,000 will be teenage boys.

Well, perhaps, but finding video-with-nudity on the 'net is not exactly hard. I find it difficult to believe that many viewers are there just for that.

I wonder how many views other stories have gotten.
