  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

John Key has announced that Judith Collins is now on her "last chance". Hold on... didn't he say exactly that after the Oravida scandal? Apparently this time he really really really means it... cross your fingers and hope to die!

This is sounding more like a Monty Python skit every day. "It's only a flesh wound" (from the Life of Brian) comes to mind.

Andrew Geddis sums up the disgust felt by many of those who have read the Hagar book.

I'm not going to take you through the cast of this tragedy in any detail, or explain exactly how they all fit together. The book does that for you. All I want to do here is give those of you who haven't managed (or won't be bothered) to read it some indication of why it matters beyond the specific questions of whether accessing a left-open computer system is a crime, or if Judith Collins was "just helping" when she gave a public servants name up for public humiliation, or if John Key's office expedited the release of some SIS information to someone ahead of someone else. Because I want to talk about the sorts of people who this book reveals for who they are, and what their participation in our politics means.

The hacker appears to have a sense of humour.

The Twitter handle carries the address 3 Hans Cres - the address of the Ecuadorian embassy in London where Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is exiled.

The handle also includes an encryption key which resolves to Winston Peter's email address.

Judith Collins has finally realised the implications of supplying a civil servant's name to Slater which resulted in death threats. And she's done a flip-flop!

Ms Collins last week confirmed she had given the man's name to Slater telling NewstalkZB: "What I was asked for was the name and the title of the guy and that's publicly available and I've simply given him that".

However, she yesterday changed her position telling the Herald she did not give Slater Mr Pleasants' name as Slater already had it.

She had not indicated to Slater she believed the man was responsible for leaking information to Labour she said.

Listening to Key saying "it's perfectly OK to take confidential stuff from a web site if the security is lax" just pisses me off

Surely Key's argument justifies any and all hacking? After all, no hacker would ever be able to access confidential information if the target site's security is solid. Perhaps anyone in NZ charged with breaching a computer system in the future will be able to rely upon "the Key Defense".

Oh, good god! Direct from the "keep slinging mud and see who it hits" department, Slater has just firmly accused Dotcom of hacking his computer. Given Nicky Hagar's statement on Q&A that Dotcom was "absolutely categorically" not the source, one would expect that Slater has just exposed himself to a rather substantial defamation claim.

Dotcom has tweeted, branding Slater a "right wing conspiracy theorist".

I'm not sure how well that matches (in terms of the law) with the apparent actions of Slater and Jordan

I believe it was actually Slater and Ede. Stealing credit card information, regardless of intention, is usually frowned upon in NZ. Can we expect a serious Police investigation over this matter?

Fairfax's Kate Shuttleworth is in Tel Aviv with Salter. In Blogging, money and blurred lines she says he was invited to visit by the Israeli government who are paying some of his costs, presumably in return for more positive PR spin. It's full of the now familiar denials from Slater, but the final paragraph is interesting.

While Slater was having his photo taken for this article, a text arrived - from Justice Minister Judith Collins. He wouldn't reveal its content, but exclaimed that it was 4am in New Zealand and wondered out loud what she was doing up.
