  • Hard News: The question of Afghanistan…, in reply to tussock,

It’s almost always the centre of a large state covering it’s current ground and some extent of the surrounding nations, all the way back into pre-history

That is surely more to do with geography rather than political influence. It begs the question of what exactly is a country, is a country defined by its people and in turn are a people defined by their leaders?. Historically the concept of a country is derived from a kingdom, an area under the control of a family or a collective of powerful people. This is, more often than not, further defined by its geography influencing the physical boarders.
So its a bit like that broom your Grandfather handed down to you, its had two new handles and a new head but it’s still the same broom.

  • Hard News: Friday music: Worst DJ ever, in reply to Russell Brown,

It was really odd how technically poor the closing was.

It's not like they didn't have the right gear...

To put this into perspective, the Vista 9 in the main gallery will provide 16 line inputs, 72 line outputs, 52 mic inputs (via RELINK sharing) with 112 AES inputs and outputs (the large number of ports being the result of having so many incoming 5.1 sources).

Situated in its own room, the Vista 5 will serve as a backup gallery to the main sound control rooms (SCRs), and will act as a bypass source (in the event of the main studio suddenly needing to be put into bypass to allow a pre-record to take place). “We will use the Vista 5 to pick up the mix, freeing up the Vista 9s to mix the pre-record,” said Bridges.

Bridges also noted that a further useful feature of the Vista 9 is its ability to upmix stereo sources to 5.1 and downmix 5.1 to stereo outputs.

But then our feed was from Sky...

Furthermore, an interactive gallery (IPCR) will manage and route 24 separate streams whose destination will be the Internet, Red Button, and other platforms, such as Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media; these will be running in stereo utilising two OnAir 3000s.

So our feed would have been in "Stereo" only, no 5.1 unless they upmixed to 5.1 at this end, which I doubt.
All of this precludes operator error of course, perhaps someone just turned the bass down 'cos they had a headache.
    ;-)

  • Hard News: Friday music: Worst DJ ever,

I actually put my ear down to the subwoofer in the lounge on Monday morning and there was pretty much nothing coming through it.

Could that be because the broadcast was in "Stereo" and not 5.1 audio and so not producing a sub-woofer signal? or does your system use a left/right mix through a low pass filter to the sub?.

  • Hard News: And so it begins, in reply to Jeremy Eade,

The fact that we have senior politicians still grappling with climate change makes you wonder whether these citizens really should be going anywhere near the education of our youth.

    It could be worse...
Kentucky lawmakers shocked to find evolution in biology tests

Representative Ben Waide, who demonstrated his lack of scientific knowledge by saying, "The theory of evolution is a theory, and essentially the theory of evolution is not science—Darwin made it up." Waide went on to say that "Under the most rudimentary, basic scientific examination, the theory of evolution has never stood up to scientific scrutiny."

Sometimes national standards are a good thing and teaching to the test means actually teaching.

  • Hard News: The question of Afghanistan…, in reply to Angus Robertson,

Either we leave and accept that religious zealots will take over. Or we stay as long as neccessary – estimates say Saudi Arabia might run out of oil in 2070.

With Saudi oil revenues approaching 1 billion a day the oil may run out but the cash will remain for some time. Saudi Arabia is seeing some reform in terms of liberalisation, voting rights for women being the most noticeable, albeit almost microscopic. We can but hope that, in time, a softening of attitudes in the middle east will ease the situation. This does not detract from the fundamental cause of conflict in that part of the world being the US greed for the worlds oil. Solve that one and the problem may well disappear.

Yes, the majority of civilised people, including teenagers, are not that nasty but then I don't come from a pit that things crawl from.

Starting reading that article and this stood out:
"the largest mass murder on the continent in the nation’s history"

My first though was “What would Harry Potter know?”
