If I may, I also suggest AndroSensor, which shows you the readings from all your phone's sensors. Not necessarily all practical, but it's free and I can think of uses for a decibel meter and raw GPS coordinates. Was a bit disappointed to find out that my Galaxy 2 doesn't have a temperature sensor, though!

  • Speaker: The great New Zealand phone…, in reply to Danyl Mclauchlan,

I think most 'hackers' just torrent said files and run them.

There is a reason that the computer security vernacular includes the highly disparaging term "script kiddie". The real geniuses find their own holes, and craft their own exploits. The lesser geniuses follow the instructions for finding the holes but still roll their own exploits. And the kiddies just torrent the exploits and call themselves hackers.

“If 30 years of trickle-down economics have failed to trickle sufficiently to raise Maori from the bottom of most socio-economic measurement scales, what do you propose to do to improve their lot while not enacting policies that do more for one particular ethnic group than any other?”

  • Hard News: A Capital Idea?, in reply to giovanni tiso,

But when he talks about Charlie’s in the last paragraph he appears to have missed the bit about Labour proposing to extend the tax to the sale of shares and businesses.

And he ignores the fact that it's yet another Kiwi company that's now sending the profits overseas instead of keeping them local.

I had to despair when listening to the radio on the way home the other evening, as the DJs enthused about how wonderful it was that Charlie's got bought out by a Japanese company. Strongly emblematic of a much bigger national problem: no grasp of the long-term consequences of selling to foreigners.

Hell, even John Roughan is in favour.

So's Matthew Hooten, that well-known socialist sympathiser!

Looking at the roll-call of rabid right-wing commentators who're weighing in to support a CGT, even if it's Labour who introduce it, I can't help but think that this could be the policy that turns it into a real election campaign. Not that Goff is incapable of thoroughly fucking up on the delivery, of course, but if he manages to not bugger it up we might be watching the end of National's "sleep walk to victory".

  • Hard News: A nation bullied,

Karma's a bitch, or so they say. I don't think there're too many people out there who won't be thinking "Whatever they get, they've had it coming."

The act I found most despicable, though I certainly haven't addressed myself to the whole litany of ills, was breaking into the cell account of a missing (and later found murdered) 13-year-old girl, deleting messages in order to free up space so that more messages could be left; and listened to. Including a subsequent message from her parents, who'd been told by the police that the activity suggested their daughter was still alive. I'm not enamoured of the "Celebrities are fair game" school, but at least a case can be made. I can think of no case to support many of NotW's other activities, however, and one hopes that the Met will begin a wide-ranging examination of corrupt activities by its officers now that the shackles of Fleet Street have been broken.

the IRD, they don’t care what line of work you are in, they just arbitrarily apply the tax rates

uh, the IRD work very hard to apply tax rates in the least-arbitrary fashion possible. If you want someone to take the blame for arbitrary, you want to be pointing your finger at the Beehive and the residents thereof.

Because in fact in the US the top jobs aren’t civil service as we understand them, but political

They're still paid < USD200k, though. And their pay is a cap on the salaries of the real civil servants - four-star military officers and their civilian equivalents cannot be paid more than a cabinet secretary.

including paying the chairman of the Fed under $200k, rather less than a junior trader on Wall St

After said Chairman made absolute piles as a trader, IIRC.

If one looks at the Cabinet Secretaries in the US, they are rarely in need of their official salary. Do we really want to follow that example? I'm far from convinced.
