the way GST works is basically the person who creates something has to pay the govt GST on it - everyone else who buys/sells it (wholesalers, retailers) has to pay the govt GST on the increase in price and whoever ends up with the item ends up holding the bag
What businesses really do is get to write off the GST they pay vs. the GST they owe - the govt gets the difference (in some cases - exporters in particular - the govt sends them a cheque)

changing the actual rate isn't that big a thing - though one of the nice things about 12.5% is that one simply divides by 9 to calculate how much GST is included in something - 15% is a pain - one now needs to divide by 7.6666666....

No - I believe he's an international currency trader - much like John Key ...
(and only one of them is Jewish - NZ has a long history of Jewish PMs)
EDIT: actually if wikipedia is to be believed they are actually both Jewish)

I've been continually disappointed by a local Paper+ that continually puts "Investigate" under "Science" but requires me search for "New Scientist" under "Paranormal ...."

In the early 80s I was chosen by some faceless piece of government to be the cost of living person for a month - I had to write down every single expense for the month - they mostly had to do with protesting the Springbok tour - I also bought a house that month - it was a small one, out by the beach, cost me $8,500.
I'm sure there were other cost of living people that month and we were all somehow statistically merged into a single mythical proto-kiwi for that month but I've always liked to think that Muldoon somehow got a report on his desk that said that we were all suddenly spending our money opposing the tour and moving to shacks by the beach ....
