  • Island Life: Driving around Mt Eden,…,

I can buy an 80 square metre kitset home & have it built, plumbed & powered, whiteware included for less than $150k.

Yes, and I could bust out of it any time I liked by shouldering the door. Assuming that the figure quoted was credible, it wouldn't surprise me if making things secure, fireproof, and safe for a lone correction officer is what bumps up the cost.

  • Up Front: NSFW,

But if I'm writing something more fast-paced and urgent, I'll use 'naked'. It's that whacking great k sound in the middle.

And yet "starkers" lacks that libidinal charge.

  • Island Life: I am curious. Yellow?,

Is there anything else we'd be looking for in a supermayor? Just sayin'.

A willingness to do whatever Robyn Gallagher tells them.

  • Speaker: A Very Simple Stroke,

I agree with all praise above.

Some people don't make much if any progress. My aunt had a stroke three or four years ago and is still almost completely speechless and unable to walk. My grandmother died within a few weeks of her stroke. When I read this story of recovery this knowledge increases my sense of how precious these gains are.

  • Hard News: Ups and Downs,

Heather, thank you. I have only just realised that the "(at best)" is ambiguous and likely meant the exact opposite of how I took it.

Incidentally, drawing attention to something by claiming you're going to ignore it is called paralipsis.

  • Hard News: Ups and Downs,

Craig, no one called you a liar. You were called out, rightly so, for this little jab:

complaining that she's (at best) being textually harassed

Frankly, I mostly avoid your comments these days, because the rhetorical wrappings completely obscure whatever sense might be lurking in them. If you find you're being misconstrued a lot, maybe you should give up the rhetorical flourishes and move to a plainer style.

  • Hard News: On the Waterfront,

Yes, I think we need to distinguish places owned by the public from places used by the public.

Robyn for Mayor of New Zealand, I say.

Apropos the SH1 re-routing: the map is too sketchy and the text too vague. But ko Taupiri te maunga , there's no way in hell Tainui would take that lying down.

  • Hard News: Ups and Downs,

I think we can lay claim to "than what" too. As in:

If I had of been him I'd of done something different that what he'd of done.
