  • Hard News: Some things you may not know,

    1) No one was ever moved to weep by a line of code.

    2) WTF! Paris has infiltrated even this last sanctuary!!

    3) Neither LOTR or Harry Potter can be considered "art" as such. They lack that obsessive polish and independent existence from their creators. The former was more-or-less an academic exercise for overgrown public schoolboys (heavily indebted to the writings of William Morris, I might add) and the latter is basically plodding padded pabalum churned out because it's lucrative (She's getting paid by the word people).

    Oh piffle, what a bunch of Romantic 19th century nonsense. Poetic inspiration has nothing to do with starving away in a attic, and everything to do with your sense of vision, your intellectual ability, and your relationship with the world.
    In essence, you are idealising what is actually a kind of intellectual transcendant masturbation that may or may not result in a mass entertainment for a high-brow elite that probably doesn't understand it anyway - probably the reason I love it so.

    And Ben, I respect your position, but dude, it's code, not Gerard de Nerval.

    I find you can generally substitute home-grown sun-dried Medeas for Antigone - if you cut them up finely enough. But I'm not a snob about my Hippolytus - I buy that at the supermarket like everyone else, pesticides be damned! Oh, and don't make the mistake I did. Peel your Oedipus first.

    TO THE TUNE OF "I'M CALLED LITTLE BUTTERCUP" from HMS Pinafore

    I am Deborah Coddington – mad Deborah Coddington,
    Though I could never tell why,
    I hate every Asian who enters this nation,
    Bigoted Coddington I!

    I always have time to expose Asian crime,
    Journalising the pure anecdotal;
    Tuberculoses, addictions to pokies
    And kidnappings fill up my total.

    T’was Alistair Taylor, and Colin, and Roger
    I lured with my feminine wiles;
    And if that distresses, I have the addresses
    Of neigbourhood paedophiles.

    I am Deborah Coddington – bad Deborah Coddington,
    Though I could never tell why,
    I dislike each Asian of any persuasion,
    Bigoted Coddington I!

  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

    As a sidebar to the Subway story, I knew Jackie back in the early 1990s and frankly this impression that she is some sort of mentally disabled teenager is laughable. She would be in her mid to late thirties by now, and so high functioning you only assume she is a bit eccentric (She has a BA, and the Asperger bit is entirely a surprise to me). This is perhaps another example of gross media exaggeration to inflate public emotion.

    The next arrogant SOB who refers to Christchurch as a hick or rural town is getting a be-atch slap from me. We have a population of quater of a million, thank you.

    I have never felt in any danger in innercity Christchurch in the wee-small hours, mainly because I take the normal precautions any city-dweller takes, ie: using well-lit main streets and taxis where possible. Are Aucklander's really such whining pansies. There are parts of the Auckland CBD I wouldn't dream of setting foot in after dark.

    I propose a television show for publically shaming the week's most obnoxious teens, in which they will have the piss taken out of them by Oscar Knightly.

    The only reason P is so prevelant in this country is that coke is so hard to get.<irony>
