I do think there's something in John Key's comment that the elevation of Goff is hardly a sign of renewal. I also think there's something in the idea that Key really doesn't want to face an Opposition leader as smart and experienced as Goff ...
I am glad with the decision, I was worried about Cunliffe and nice to see the unions did not go rouge or have the chance to vent.Nice to see a unified Labour party which is a credit to Helen.

Under National, softball will gain prominence (3 strikes and you're out).

Ben, maybe one day politicians from the two main parties may breakaway and form a centrist party. Only time will tell the direction we are heading and from that, people will form views about political parties and politicians.

In electorates like Mt Roskill and Mt Albert, or Wigram and Port Hills, you saw Labour MPs comfortably re-elected (call Jim Anderton Labour for the purposes of this) but a National party vote coming in surprisingly high. In Roskill, National's party vote was higher than Labour's; in Wigram, National's party vote was within hundreds of Labour's. Clearly, people were splitting their vote, one red and one blue
Indeed,I still can't get my head around the way some people voted like that.

SO, Goff or Cunliffe for Labour leader, then?
Goff and Mark Gosche will be president.
Key's speech.
Words like flexible,individual...fuck its started.

I hope Key is true to his word about ruling Roger Douglas out of a cabinet post. If not, NZ is about to be an economic experiment for the Australian HR Nicholls society.
Cricket score is 325-7.

They say people deserve to get the government they vote for - good people, what do you say?
Unfortunately the good people lost tonight.Greed was the winner on the day.

I voted back on the 22nd October, by downloading the online voting papers and posting back to Wellington. I miss the excitement of casting a ballot at a booth on election day, just seems more real.
It's great to do your little part for democracy and nice to see predictions of a large turn-out.
