As I mentioned on David's post-before-last, I believe the perception is that she's lazy and not very dedicated. Also, Helen never actually put her in cabinet which is not a supportive move.
I understand she did a lot behind the scenes but politics is as much about being seen to be doing something as actually doing it and she let herself down/was let down there.

Oh look - I know - I'm trying to draw a 'guilt-by-association' thing with Nikki. Brushing tar and all that.
I'm sure she's a lovely woman who will prove to do great things for her constituents (whoever they may be). ;)
FGS - why couldn't Nandor have been back in the race? He would have had a good chance.

For the benefit of non-Aucklanders
and Aucklanders who don't get out,
can you please elaborate on what Soul Bar is and what Casablanca was ?
Soul is a bar/restaurant in the Viaduct Basin run by Judith Tabron who is a very good restaurateur. The food is excellent and the location superb.
Unfortunately, the bar tends to fill with a party crowd of questionable taste - perhaps once described as 'white-shoed', with all the connotations that denotes.
Casablanca, nick-named Catch-a-Wanker, was a club in the heart of Parnell during the late 80s/early 90s - similar (and according to my usually reliable source, the same) crowd (of men, at least). I think I went there once. At most, twice.
Am I a snob? Yes. Someone has to have standards.

Ouch - was that a bit nasty?
-
PS - I notice in today's Herald online that Nikki celebrated at Soul yesterday afternoon.
Someone described Soul Bar to me as the same crowd (men) that used to party at Casablanca in Parnell and now, of course, are 20 years older, but that the women are the same age as those who once frequented the earlier venue.
What does that tell us about Nikki, I wonder?

Weel...real or not, the perception of Judith Tizard is that she's lazy and not too bright and does nothing for Auckland.
People believed she was there to fill in a seat for Labour and had, how shall we say, grown accustomed to the role and took it for granted.
She was never offered a cabinet post in spite of being best buddies with the PM - not exactly a vote of confidence in her abilities. (note - Russ - I'm not necessarily agreeing with this - I'm just saying this is many people's perceptions, is all).
She has no profile and any time there's a contentious issue to do with Auckland - her area of responsibility - she is conspicuous by her absence from the debate (to resort to cliche).
Combined with gentrification of Auckland Central - I mean, CitRats have a Councillor from Western Bays, FFS and have you seen how many porches, range rovers and audis park along Ponsonby Rd these days (I remember when...blah, blah, blah) - and a swing to National, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise that she had a fight.
Never met Nikki Kaye. She's 28. I'm sure she'll be enthusiastic, full of energy and it will be interesting how things go with trying to negotiate with John Banks -though they probably have similar ideologies, anyway.

well, I like Iain M. Banks. I started enjoying Iain Banks but then got bored. Walking on Glass was good but liked The Bridge even more. To quote Craig..."bite me".

nothing on NZ First? Or is Winston so beyond self-parody he's back to self-parody again and there's no point?

Now if we can sort out the fireworks, you'll be a model citizen.

McCain might be fighting dirty but a story just launched in the latest Rolling Stone should help balance things up...
