Being not National is a great reason to exist.
If Labour wants to reposition itself as a conservative party that merely reacts against National policy then they should make a conscious decision to do that, and they can formulate strategy and run an election campaign based on such a platform.
But I don't think that's how the Goff-lead Labour Party see themselves. I think they're mostly just a collection of individuals who are personally ambitious to be important and powerful, and they understand that they need to be seen to oppose the National government's policies in order to get their jobs. -
how can four people discuss a novel about The Rapture without alighting on the Left Behind series, which must surely have been in the author’s mind?
I have read the first Left Behind book, and the only thing that sticks in my mind is that every female character is described in terms of attractiveness and hair-color: ie she was a stunning blonde, she was a gorgeous red-head, ect, so the whole thing had this weird porno vibe even though it's a book promoting evangelical christianity.

That's not quite true. When you visit Libya pretty much every local you meet explains that they're not Libyan, but part of some tribe, and that they hate the rest of Libya.

Actually no, I was thinking of contacting the major ad spenders in the SST and sending them a polite letter summarising Laws' various outrages and regretfully advising them that they were enabling him and that as a result I would no longer use their products.

Just as the public has the right to contact companies that advertise in Kemeys' newspaper and tell them they'll boycott their products so long as they advertise in a medium in which Laws is published - which is, I think, the next logical step to take.

So who is the deputy editor who actually does select and edit pieces for the op ed section?
I don't think there's any selection regarding Laws. They publish what he gives them, because they're afraid of upsetting him and his radio audience if they don't.

So if Steve Braunias lost his contract because he wrote a rude email to a reader, and now Laws has written an even ruder and more offensive email to another reader, doesn’t that automatically mean that the company (since it seems to be higher than the editor) will terminate him? Should I email the editor to check?
My impression from the interview is that the decision to fire Laws would be well above Kemeys' pay grade.

I've no doubt whatsoever that opinions expressed in the main political blogs come to the attention of politicians and are actively read by them and their flunkies.
A couple of weeks ago I was chatting with a press sec for a National Minister, and a post I'd pre-written and timed to be released mid-morning went up on the blog. A few seconds later a quote from the post showed up in his inbox via the press sec mailing list.
So yeah - they're watching.
