Hmm, can I flipflop, just for the sake of not pissing Danielle off?
Did I say I didn't like her music? I had read a lot of the history and had very high expectations (including buying the $20 single). Yes I can appreciate how incredible it is for an 'Oklahoma Mama' to sing Fujiyama Mama, Hard Headed Woman and other songs of this ilk in the 50s. She deserves all accolades and much respect.
While some moments captured all of this, others, not so much. You're probably right that I shouldn't compare her to Neil Young and co. How about Kylie Minogue?

I think it's not at all important, in terms of what has arisen out of it. The right to protest should not be dependent on making perfect sense, or dealing with the complexity of the issues.
Hmm, how do I do this without saying 'but'?
Seems to me Norman is more than capable of 'dealing with the complexity of the issues', and therefore this was a wasted opportunity. Is it that hard to imagine a better use of his privileged access than this?
I'm not speaking about protesting in general, just Norman in particular.

Danielle, sorry if I rained on your parade, but it just wasn't quite as Rock 'n' Roll as say Neil Young, Iggy Pop, John Cale, or other 'Icons' I've seen in the past ten years. I don't have a problem with her religious choices, or her gospel singing, it was just a lot of little things that added together bugged me a bit. But I won't be Crying in the chapel.
Come to think of it, where was that list of homoerotic movies? Elvis poll dancing, FTW?

In related news, Pauling's second Nobel (Peace) Prize was for the banning of atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. Coincidence?

"Free Tibet now!". Not separate statehood, I presume (which would lose in Tibet on a democratic vote amongst its present population). Although I suppose "Greater autonomy and more religious freedom for Tibet, now!" is a bit of a mouthful.
This is important, and why the whole thing left me wondering what he hoped to achieve. If everyone goes off and reads the complexity of the situation, sifts through propaganda, on both sides, and arrives at some higher level of understanding, and subsequently knowledge, upon which we can hang our pointy hats, then good. Does "Free Tibet Now" do this? Meh.
Still, here we are discussing it, so might not be so foolish after all.

I was just listening this weekend to the bootleg of Cale at the Gluepot in 1983, which still sounds compelling.
Hmm, I might have to check with my friendly bootlegger on that one. He was good at the Bruce Mason last year (or was it 2008?)* but didn't play my favourites. Venus in Furs was special though.
Carry on with the Norman Conquest.

From what I saw, Rod Donald's 'protest' was wholly more dignified, and probably more respected (and respectful) than these theatrics.

Sorry for the high-jack, but in finding the song above, I found this from the Hillsborro in Christchurch in 1983. Probably my favourite love song of all time. And this rendition had to be shared. I keep a close watch.

* That is seriously disturbing. And then what? They make them eat it? It seems a high cost for disciplining your children to waste good salmon.

Who was adorable! (I was reminded a little of the Ray Davies Storytellers-type show I saw some years ago.)
Adorable, yes, in a 'Grandma sings Rockabilly' kind of way. Her voice is certainly noteworthy, but I lost count at about 50 Elvis name drops, and when she yodelled, and found Jesus in the same night as trying to think of as many Christian approved euphemisms for 'I shagged Elvis', it lost some of it's appeal for me.
Loved the music, and her Jack White produced B-Side Shakin' All Over* was a stomper, but there was something missing. A gap in my life that I couldn't quite fill. Maybe I needed to let the saviour in?**
*Vince Taylor's version not too shabby either.
