  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

Autism can be diagnosed with a brain scan

Interesting, but extremely preliminary, given the numbers involved and the fact that they only looked at adult men.

I did read it with my special patented Ben Goldacre Bad Science detecting glasses firmly in place.

I have been told by people in the past that to disagree with their position was the same as being socially difficult. So I am not sure how I rate.

Interesting. My wife (from the UK) enjoys a vigorous discussion, but has been rather taken aback a couple of times (in NZ) to be told how 'aggressive' she is. To which she wanted to reply 'well, rather that than your passive-aggressive response'. But that would have been rude....

I've been pondering the whole 'social enabler' thing. I noticed some years ago that the kind of people I tend to be drawn to are those who are very...wysiwyg...for want of a better phrase. Not necessarily the most charismatic/sunny people in the room, but those that call a spade a spade, and aren't shy about letting you know that up front. I am terrible at reading between the lines of conversation or behavioural characteristics.

That cliched scene in films/tv where the heroine runs out after an argument with the hero, screaming 'I never want to see you again', and the poor doofus has to have it explained to him by a convenient 3rd party that, really, what she wants is for him to go after her? I mean, seriously, if she wanted to keep shouting at him, why didn't she just bloody stay there, then?

How does that fit in with the experience of other high scorers?

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

It's really helpful to cultivate a bunch of stock observations. And to perfect the "mmmhmmm" noise.

    Yes, but...

I am so tempted to respond, "Do you want details? Do you really care?".

Guess I'm just too honest for this cruel dishonest modern world :)

And just to clear up some confusion, this song is all about dancing, right...?

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

Like many others on here, I find it quite easy to be 'social' in quite tightly defined situations with well-defined rule sets. Doing a work presentation in front of colleagues? No problem. Wedding speeches? No problem. Door-to-door sales? No problem. Freeform social interaction? No so much....

Finding it very interesting that other people have much the same experience.

Ya, exceptional ability of any kind usually involves obsessive training, and that goes for sports, arts, music, intellectualizing, writing, pretty much anything.

The hitch is, of course, that first you have to care enough about social interaction to want to play the game.

Very interesting point. Although I like to think I have a very broad spectrum of interests, they don't seem to overlap much with the day-to-day interests of other people. I find it very difficult to even pretend to be interested in the conversational stuff that other people use as social lubricant.*

Want to talk about the weather? Maybe you should talk to someone else.
Want to talk about that local sports team? Talk to someone else.
That TV show you watched last night? Talk to someone else.
The lastest Hollywood celebrity shenannigans? Talk to someone else.
Your rant about Helen Clarke? Is ignorant and distasteful.
Your rant about the global warming conspiracy? Makes you look stupid.

I simply have no interest in 'playing the game'. Needless to say, cab rides and visits to the barber are usually a fairly agonising experience.

*I mentioned this thread to my wife last night. She rolled her eyes and replied 'nah. You're just rude.' Probably closer to the truth.

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

This typo is making me think of gloriously backwards Steampunk hats and doubled-up chains and "yo yo yo, I say, good sir!" type talking.

You may have just invented a genre. Steampunk Rap.

I'd certainly go for a pair of turntables styled along the lines of those steampunk keyboards that keep cropping up around the internet. As long as they also came with an unfeasibly large pair of horn-style speakers.

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

I was talking to someone about my experience with John Peel, who I spent some time chaperoning around Auckland

Shelia's description of him from 'Marbeck of the marshes' certainly makes interesting reading. Her description of his desire to be part of, yet separate from, day-to-day family socialising was quite striking.

    Edit: 34. Fuck...!

  • Hard News: Watching the Watchmen,

I figure if you cant fight human nature, giggle

The bleak humour that is usually the result of experiencing the darker side of human nature is usually the funniest, in my opinion. Although audiences need to be chosen carefully.

Family and friends from outisde the loop were not particularly appreciative of the numerous 'dead baby' jokes I acquired after a stint working as IT support in Peckham social services.

Jimmy Carr's joke about the UK's 2012 paralympic team caused quite a fuss amongst civilians, but I've heard that squaddies in Afghanistan found it quite funny.

  • Hard News: Watching the Watchmen,

Surely the US has been trying for a long, long time to prevent groups like the Taliban getting weapons?

If by 'a long long time' you actually mean 'since they stopped spending billions of dollars making sure Afghanistan was awash with modern weapons'.

The Pakistan/Afghanistan border region is one of those places in the world where you can buy an AK47 in exchange for a packet of cigarettes. And you'd be ripped off at that price.

Most of the recent western combat casualties have been caused by IEDs, not 'combat' per se.

And if the US doesn't want the Taliban to have money to pay for weapons, it should probably stop giving it away.
