This platform thing? It's basically video on demand plus the ability to have curated channels if you want to sit in front of it and watch a logical, time appropriate sequence of programming, right?
Isn't that Youtube?
And if not, couldn't NZOA either layer on Youtube, work with Google (who would, I'm sure, love the extra content) or in the worst case throw down a few mil on a clone (with ads to defer the AWS bill).

Hard News: Done like a dinner, in reply to
The amount of fission and fusion would depend on the design of the physics package, but a modern design would have quite a lot of fusion. I'm sure it could be optimized.

Also, I have a better design for a 100MW fusion reactor.
- First, drill a deep hole. 1km x 1m^2 should suffice.
- Fill the hole with water (sea water will do).
- Into the hole drop a small (1kT) thermonuclear bomb every 10 hours or so. Trigger it at the bottom.
- This produces 4TJ every 40,000s or 100MW of energy, which will be dissipated in the water and surrounding rock without breaking the surface.
- The energy can be extracted through a regular geothermal type system.Much easier than inertial confinement.

Surely just the steam turbine (or other heat/electricity conversion gear) for a 100MW (I am very unconvinced by a "tech" site that doesn't know the difference between milli and mega, but assume the latter) is going to be bigger than a "trailer".
Also, something that is producing 100MW of energetic neutrons will need a lot of shielding, you would think.

This text (which may be public domain in NZ) describes an interesting interactive TV format which you might find more popular than a plain discussion show, combining as it does political discussion with low impact aerobics.
I'm sure there are many contemporary figures you could cast in the Goldstein role. The interactive part, of course, involves the observation of viewers watching online and the arraignment of those showing insufficient enthusiasm.

ActiveRecord pluralization: what's the point?

Legal Beagle: Council Elections: STV Q&A, in reply to
John Morrison
Is an example of what's wrong with a "no party" system. If he was an overt National candidate (as opposed to a NACT supporter pretending to be independent) he'd be an embarrassment to the party organization (and probably would never have been adopted as a candidate).
Why is it worse to have candidates who've been selected in a primary process by a parties membership* than ones who are just legends in their own minds?
* Although party processes to select local council candidates, even in the Greens, leave a lot to be desired. I think it's mostly a case of finding a ward with no candidate, putting ones hand up and not being vehemently shouted down.

Hard News: Event Season, in reply to
Shouldn't that be the absolute monarchical dictatorship boat.
According to that report, the UAE government, which owns the Emirates airline and I guess co-funds "our" boat, has 90 government critics in detention, has imposed 21 death sentences and actually executed one person (this in a pretty small place, remember), arbitrarily arrests regime critics and strip them of their nationality,
But hey, I'm sure they would never be nasty to a Kiwi musician, so they're the Good Guys, right?

I have a theory that interest in the America's Cup is inversely proportional to actual sailing experience. It seems to just be a national victory ritual that could as easily be enacted over Formula One, tiddlywinks or cane toad racing.
(Did anyone notice how stable fore-aft the AC-whatsit was on its near capsize, compared to a small cat like a Dart, which tends to dig a hull in and cartwheel at the slightest provocation. That wasn't commented on at all).

About half the population don't have adequate numeracy skills (such as being able to check their payslip) - I think the media reflects that in their failure to cope with anything that requires a grasp of numbers.
