  • Hard News: Windows 7: Actually Not Bad,

Although I'm starting to wonder if what I want is the new Dell 11z. It seems like the bastard love child of a netbook and laptop. Mmmm 1.35kg. Mmmm dual cores. And only ~$1200

But that page says Dell's charging US$399 - at current exchange rates plus GST it ought to be NZ$600.

I've been a long time Dell fan but Dell's NZ online sales sucks badly - they haven't tracked the NZ$ changes - the quad core laptop I lust after comes in at some silly price over $12k - and the NZ web page is so poorly configured it's not actually possible to buy it. Last time I checked their web page also requires you to choose what city you live in - there are four choices, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Rotorua. I still get paper spam addressed to ".... Dunedin, Christchurch, New Zealand"

Oh yeah - like the Nats are going to do that (nor is Labour in their quest for the swing vote)

If we do build a Taj who would be buried in it?

  • Random Play: The Seduction of the Strange,

When I lived in the US the federal and state income tax forms would have check boxes "would you like to give 1$ to <insert cause here>"

I think it's about time we had a similar check box labeled "Rugby" - that way we can create a Ministry of Rugby, fund them with a yearly budget from the check box and hold them to it, no cost overruns. If they want to do really big things they can save up for them like the rest of us.

I agree that tourists are not going to stay and extra night .... but ... a big arch bridge like Dubai's, a rollercoaster .... might just work ....

If you're going to have a signature harbour bridge for heavens sake don't repeat the mistakes of the past - make it look different from Sydney's

  • Speaker: The Freeviewer Diaries (3),

When my kids were young we had a device somewhat similar to the one you describe - when the children woke up before adults the television only received (this was in the US) PBS - which means Mr Rogers, Sesame St and yoga - after the children went to bed it magically received other channels - this was so successful that for many years the kids were unaware that we could receive other channels.

It all worked by taking an old VCR (the one child #1 had previously filled with buttered toast) and programming it to only pass the 2 channels - in back of the TV was an A/B switch (Adult/Baby) that chose the signal source for the TV.

While I was designing DVRs for a living I kept pushing for tagged remotes so you could set them up as different 'users', leave the B remote around and hide the A one ....
