    +1 Idiot Savant -
Its the power and intention behind the "spying" that's the concern

  • Hard News: The Real Threat, in reply to Paul Campbell,

Yeah love the fight back talk Paul. Could we flood the GCSB with a withering array of minutia , recipes , what toothpaste we used this morning, how the asparagus is doing, what the cat bought in and yes how many sheets of dunny paper used per day.

More people need to get out and vote – they do however need to have an opposition to for whom they will get out and vote.

That's the big one . In the last election 25.8 % of eligible voters just didn't vote. That is second to National's 32.3% of eligible voters. Labour got 18.7%

If the non voters could be inspired to vote who would they vote for ? And why would they vote?

Agree Sacha, they need you on their policy/media team.
Or maybe they could learn a thing or two from the Greens.

Lack of proper opposition disturbs me more

    +1 Sacha
It the thing that disturbs me the most. I can all rant on about the National Lead govt neo liberal agenda but they are totally focused on the 30% of people who want the same agenda and thats enough to get them into power. The opposition is fractured and weak. Labour is endlessly looking up its own arse, Maori are splintered , Winston is only interested in power leaving the Greens to do what they can. That's the crisis .

  • Hard News: A different kind of country,

I heard a chilling take on all this from a key person in Horizon Research ( sorry can't name them) . All the Nats need is to do is keep 30 - 32% of the voting population happy, if they get their votes they will get a majority of seats in parliament . The other 70% is split between the other parties and non voters. The 30 - 32% really like what the Nats are doing , all of it and the Nats PR machine knows this very well.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

I love oats. I fancy its my Scottish ancestry channeling itself into my cooking.
Oat milk - beautiful, way better than Soy or that weasel piss Rice milk. In my humble opinion of course. Great with coffee since I had to go off cow's milk .
Also works well with Whiskey but be-where far too easy to drink .

Rolled oats added to old school mince - two handfuls - gives it a satisfying nuttiness.

Last night I oated roast potatoes. Par boiled the potatoes, drain, add rolled oats - ground up a bit first in mortar and pestle - coat well and roast with heaps of olive oil.
Again that oaty nuttiness and lovely crunch lifted the potatoes to another level.

There, I've oated myself, and I'm proud of it !

  • Hard News: The United States of Surveillance?, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Anyone seen this site offering protection from network surveillance.

Wouldn’t that be the perfect business model / front for a savvy / sneaky intelligence gathering operation that wanted to corral a lot of ‘people with something to hide’?

Oh dear Ian , I hadn't thought of that , my paranoia clearly needs a tune up .

While Tor offers a theoretical level of true anonymity, people using it are vulnerable to traffic analysis as information enters and leaves it. Which in turn allow the “metadata” kind of relationship analysis.

A deep pattern linking people watching instructable videos on worm farming and mathematical proofs, and a fear of ill health abroad

Must be the mathematical proofs Ben , I watched a few worm farm vids and got ads for cell phones and Mitre 10.
