I won't be indulging the protest awards being staged by the so-called New Zealand Bloggers Union.
The NZBU represents all New Zealand bloggers, didn't you know? And you're a member! Its some VSM thing.

Craig - by "girl" I was trying to channel Little Rascals and the no girls allowed kind of vibe that a lot of comedy gets, not infantilise the individuals it applies to.
Interesting. The Little Rascals were known for their He-Man Woman Haters Club. More than 80 years on, are they still before their time?

What was the alternative? Terry and bloody June? The good life? Hyacinth Bucket?
'Flying Circus' started in 1969. And was over before 'The Good Life' (mid-late 70s), and 'Terry and June' (late 70s-late 80s), and 'Keeping Up Appearances' (early-mid 90s) were even on.
It was at the time of 'Dad's Army', and the second goes around of 'Steptoe and Son' and 'The Likely Lads'. If you branch out from Comedy, the heights of 'The Ascent of Man' were another alternative.
And are you disparaging 'The Good Life'?

Please. No saying.
Aww. Hmmm ... just one?
John Locke is really a fictional High School in the final ever episode of Law & Order. Freaky.
Can we ruin the final episodes of other show for you, though?
In the final episode of ALF, ALF gets captured by the Alien Task Force. To be continued...
Cancellation comes as somewhat of a surprise. There's later a TV movie without any of the actors from the show.
In the final episode of Sledge Hammer, the city gets destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Except this time renewal comes as a surprise, so the second series is a prequel.
In the final episode of JAG (watched by more people than the final of Lost) the main characters get engaged.

The Royal commission's findings - which were arrived at after a thorough and open process - all seemed very sensible and workable, with the only omission a recommendation on STV or other proportional voting system.
This is simply false. A number of the Royal Commission's recommendations were [trying to think of some quaint phrase] complete tosh.
They proposed having councillors who weren't elected, with people in the central city not having a right to vote for a councillor at all, and others voting out of proportion to their numbers.
I had ideas, at one time, of taking many of the idiotic proposals the Royal Commission suggested and writing them up as my own offensive prescription for Auckland governance to howls of PAS outrage.
But I was busy and the opportunity passed.

There are plenty, but apart from Toni Collette, who has enough personalities to contend with, who would you suggest for this?
Without having seen it, and recognising that the show might be different/worse with someone else, actresses well-placed to play women (with teenage children) with things for younger guys might include 45 y.o. Teri Hatcher (or some other Desperate Housewives alumna, such as 46 y.o. Nicollette Sheridan), or 53 y.o. Kim Cattrall.
That said, I don't know that I'm suggesting these people so much as disputing the implication there weren't other "older" women TV actresses.

Cougar Town shows promise. I keep trying to think of other people who could play the lead, and haven't got there yet.
Are you saying there aren't many attractive "older" types in Hollywood, or that there is something particular in the way Courteney Cox plays the lead that means she owns the role?
I've been reading quite a lot of reviewers saying Cougar Town improves dramatically as a quirky ensemble piece instead of Courtney Cox as a tacky sexual sight gag.
I'd heard that too. ABC were given a premise that sold them, but the show changed very quickly. Not unlike Aqua Teen Hunger Force, or Lost (to bring us full circle):

In the file of things people should have been watching: First Australians, which finished its run on Maori TV yesterday.
As for Lost, I taped the first episode. It was a double episode, and never had the opportunity to watch a "movie-length" premiere over the following before the third episode aired. Thus, I have never seen Lost. That'll teach you TV2.

The fact that John Key put the kibosh on the whole thing via press conference gives me the shits. Basic courtesy would suggest he tells the other parties first.
He did tell the others first. Tūhoe was informed before the public announcement (as was the Maori Party).
