  • Hard News: Jonesing,

I imagine that the people who are supporting Jones have the lines already prepared for when he loses: "left-wing party activists out of touch with ordinary keewees". Just don't give them any credence.

  • Hard News: Jonesing,

Personally, I discount any information or opinions on the Labour leadership from the right, whether that's Farrar or the press gallery.

At least those of us to the left of Labour would (mostly) like to see them forming a succesful government - the right want either the Nats in again, or if that's impossible a "Labour" government sufficiently right-wing as not to disturb their many privileges and interests.

My problem with Shane Jones isn't his pr0n viewing, though it would be nicer if he wouldn't use our money to do it (top tip for politicians - if you're offered a credit card, refuse it. File your expenses after the fact and have a trusted assistant check them through thoroughly for appropriateness).

I just object to his support for big corporates screwing their workers and the planet.

  • OnPoint: BTW, the NZ Police can use…, in reply to Chris Waugh,

I have a Raspberry PI and a Beagleboard on my desk: both are British system integration, British CPU architecture, open-source everything from the bootrom up, US chipset and physically stuck together in China. (NZ designed and built case, too)

Also, simple enough that the community would probably find any trapdoors - especially on the Beagleboard which has a documented Ti chipset, not that NDAed Broadcom crap.

Maybe that's why I had to sign an agreement not to use the Beagleboard to make WMD before Element14 would ship it.

  • Hard News: And one war ends?, in reply to James Dunne,

Which clarifies things a lot, thanks.

I hadn't realized there are "schedule 7 analogues" which are specified in precise terms and then a catch-all for other similar substances.

Incidentally, I'd like to see deuterium analogues investigated. Deuterated amphetamines have been researched and I believe tritiated pharmaceuticals are used as tracers (become your own glowstick!).

It's an interesting question as to whether a molecule which has a non-natural isotopic composition is an analogue or the original molecule, legally?

As far as I'm aware, the Psychoactive Substances Act (sched 2 part1) changed the Misuse Of Drugs Act (s2) such that an approved psychoactive substance is carved out of the meaning of "controlled drug analogue".

IANAL, but my reading of this is that analogues *can* be taken through the process.

Basically, we need to move to open source based router and infrastructure platforms that can be independently analysed for malware and trapdoors.

  • Hard News: This time it's Syria, in reply to Chris Waugh,

Chris: my point is that fear of nuclear escalation stopped the US or USSR taking any action that would put their troops into direct conflict on a any scale. Deniable gangs of mercenaries, blockades, but nothing that might wind up with a division of American troops shooting at a division of Russian ones.

As documented in this recently released history, Eisenhower wouldn't even allow U2 overflights of the USSR without the aircraft being unmarked, unarmed and flown by a nominal civilian.

  • Hard News: This time it's Syria, in reply to Chris Waugh,

they certainly did seem to enjoy a good proxy war

Right, but the US was restrained from marching into North Vietnam and Russia similarly from entering Pakistan by the likelihood that they'd wind up with a direct US/USSR conflict. It's all hypothetical, but how would Cuba have played out without nukes - the US invading Cuba to end Castro's revolution, emboldening Russia to seize West Berlin?

If you live south of about Kaikoura you can't even enter your home location - bloody northern hemispherians trying to teach us geography...
