Since you're here, I just received my copy of The Windup Girl which I am devouring as time allows. I wonder whether reading it hard on the heels of Norwegian Wood is such a good idea. Especially as that was not, as I was reliably informed, about sex with Norse gods.

Just getting into The Wire, and I was truly confused when the two cops (one homicide and one narcotics) used conventional typewriters. I started to wonder what decade I was in, and then they mentioned the Twin Towers.
Baltimore. Anachronism central, USA. Actually this was discussed in The Guardian back in 2008.
The Barksdale drugs war in the Murphy Homes, on which the first series is based, is referred to by Simon in his book as happening in 1983, which is many drug generations ago. Cars are contemporary but cops peck away at old-fashioned typewriters and the surveillance technology could date back to the TV series of Mission Impossible.

Just by the way, I intensely envy Henry Sandon. He doesn't do what he does for wealth (although I would guess he is well off enough nowadays), he does it because he loves it. He is possibly the happiest man I've ever seen on telly.
And he has a convertible Morrie 1000! That is another show I love zoning out to. Still haven't recovered from the US version once when someone brought in a Navajo blanket that just happened to be worth USD $500,000. And here it is... I could watch that all day.

With appropriate emphasis to indicate the gaining of knowledge... 'No, I did not know that!' Apparently these programmes are also partly responsible for the property bubble, and subsequent demise. The power of television aye? Or not.
Occasionally I'll even watch one of the 'trashy' shows. Happily sit down in front of survivor for an hour and that Bret Michaels and the Bimbettes show is good stupid fun.
Page 6. Here it comes. 'One person's trash is another person's treasure'... etc ad nauseum.
