  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

well we do have this couch that's seen better days ...

it's got a foldout bed built in, weighs a tonne, he'd never get it out the door ...

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

My son starts Uni next year, at Otago .... I think we're going to have aloud readings from the court news and other salient parts of the paper over the next few weeks ....

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

I'm mostly in the "if you throw a bottle at the cops you ought to end up in court" camp ... burning your own couch shouldn't be that big a deal provided you have the appropriate permits and stuff from the fire dept - and if not spraying the area with a fire hose should probably be in order

The whole couch burning thing will right itself eventually - there's only a fixed number of couches in circulation in the 2nd hand stores of Dunedin ... I bet the number hasn't been increasing .... eventually it will get close enough to 0 that no one will want to give them up

On the other hand I did happen to get a ride to the airport very early Sunday morning from a cab driver who had spent all night driving people home from the hospital - sounds like the cops went a bit overboard with the pepper spray (to the point that they apparently actually ran out)

  • Up Front: Disunited,

I saw my primary school bully on the bus once, he'd just got out of jail ... sometimes the last laugh is a knowing smile out the window

heh - I tried to persuade Russel a few years back - he was in the US for Foo camp - and I was going to the playa on the tail end of a trip paid for by a client - it's a tough thing to do though - you need real infrastructure - enough food, water, shelter and alcohol/whatever for a week - there's nothing to buy there but ice - you want to be comfortable in 40C days and sometimes close to 0C nights otherwise you will have no fun - so go with some friends preferably at least some people who've been before

And of course you have to bring lots of cheap beer for fizzball

It's late here - time for me to sleep - 'nite

well BM has this whole "No spectators" ethic going on - you're supposed to take part, not just watch - bring your giant unworkable sculpture of a body part (or broken chandelier on the plane from NZ and erect it on the playa so that it blows away as soon as the wind comes up ....

OK I'm being a bit facetious - really I'm more jealous, here I am on a biz trip to the US (SF even) and most of my burner friends went off to the playa 2 days ago leaving me staring deadlines in the face - in the past I've managed to swing a week on the playa at the end of a trip - but this time there's no way .... maybe next year ....

well a small corner of it is being streamed .... communications a BM is a controversial issue this year - someone installed a cell tower nearby and now everyone's tweeting .... other's are threatening to destroy every cell-phone on sight ..... the burners I hangout with on line have started a "Wall of Shame" lambasting those who communicate back from the playa

BTW this is probably a slightly better link: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/burningman-live - best time to look is NZ mornings for playa daylight

I have to agree with Scott and Joshua - I've had companies in California and now NZ - NZ is the easiest, cheapest place to deal with - PAYE is a great example - takes me 10 minutes a month, most of which is finding the checkbook GST another 10 every 2 months - in CA I had to file with the IRS, the CA Franchise Tax Board and the CA State board of Equalization - I would spend days a year dealing with red tape - and of course total marginal rates are higher there too. NZ red tape is wonderfully non-existant.

It may be that this is may just be simply a case of the right actually believing their own propaganda and going off and doing something stupidly complex as a result.

  • Up Front: Smut-Clog Part 2: This Time…,

How strangely relevant - just last night I was sitting by the lake at lovely restaurant, it was a warm night and some time around 11 the conversation turned to point where people talked about their various brain surgeries, and various bizarre presurgery symptoms - I felt quite left out .....

So good luck, collect some great war stories, and make sure you bring Adric home in a jar - I'm now reliably informed that you can't do that in the US any more just in case he and his ilk fall into the hands of evil malpractice lawyers
