  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

They're stopping at Hobbit 2, right? It's quite well greedy enough to have split the story in half.

  • Up Front: Oh, Cock!,

Measured, yes, compared, no. TBH, measuring it is not that easy...

Ben, is it me or you just took all the fun out of cock-measuring?

Gordon Campbell seems to imply that Warners were waiting for a competitive tax break from National in light of other international 2010 offers and National being the party of business decided not to change their bid, because they are bad businessmen.

Again, without knowing the particulars or if the government was in fact even lobbeyed, why assume they should have agreed to whatever Warner was asking? These incentives aren't cheap. Perhaps Ireland is simply more desperate. For a bit of context, their unemployment is at 13 per cent.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

I've obtained and uploaded a PDF of the backgrounder that the film techs were given at yesterday's meeting at Weta, here.

"Most kiwi actors, almost without exception, choose to be independent contractors, because it carries enormous tax advantages"

Why, what's the alternative? Being permanently employed by... whom?

I like how legislators have managed to make it seem like a profession that has to live from job to job which may wish to organise is guilty ipso facto of "price-fixing". How charming.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

Up until now, Peter Jackson's mana within the industry had been keeping the movies here.

That seems like a big claim. I think we have a very capable industry with a proven track record of keeping to schedules. It just so happens we're not the only ones, but I would hesitate to say it was all down to Jackson's clout.

I'd also point out that Ireland trades in Euros, and that the New Zealand dollar has butchered the Euro in the last twelve months.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

It probably says something about me that it bothers me that Peter Jackson seems unable to spell "Warner Bros".

I'd say if you're the outfit contracting to produce the films, industrial relations stability would be a concern shared with its financial backers at the studios.

I am confused as to how exactly he's trying to keep the film in NZ, is all, when everything he's saying endorses Warner's position.

The worst thing in all this (right after the jobs lost): Brownlee gets to gloat.

The only silver lining I can think of: no fucking Wellywood sign next to the airport, I should hope.

  • Hard News: Yet More Hobbit,

Has anyone seen an attempt to crunch numbers on the costs of the actors demands. How much would it add on to costs?

Ah, but that's the best part. Actual demands are irrelevant, because even though the union block was lifted over a week ago, quoth Jackson:

"The damage inflicted on our film industry by [the actors unions] is long since done."

The move has undermined Warner Brothers confidence in the industry "and they are now, quite rightly, very concerned about the security of their $500m investment".

"Quite rightly". Somebody tell me again that Jackson isn't siding with Warner over this.

  • Hard News: Yet More Hobbit,

I'm not suggesting he's all about the money. But let's not forget his stake in all of this, as we shouldn't with any of the participants. I mean if he also gets to walk away like Warner with his reputation untarnished, and a bunch more money in his pocket, surely that will sweeten things a bit.
