Another side issue here: Do The Police actually care less about enforcing electoral laws? I've got my doubts, and not for the first time have to ask if it's time to give the Electoral Commission some teeth?

  • Capture: The Night Time Is The Right Time,

I don’t know why, but having this playing in the background of the pics is… existentially trippy. :)

  • Muse: OPEN HOUSE: Margaret Mahy, The…, in reply to Rob Stowell,

    Rob:

I'm just going to tautoko what everyone else has said, but make this observation. Margaret was an intensely private person, and I'd never ask you to violate that but her work shone with the generous wisdom and kindness of someone who has known adversity rather than been mastered by it. That's as precious as any words on paper, and please offer the condolences of the whole Public Address (and PAS) whanau to your family.

Another really awesome thing about reading the tributes here and elsewhere? The reminder that reading is -- or should be -- a life-long conversation not a string of passively-received monologues.

  • Muse: OPEN HOUSE: Margaret Mahy, The…, in reply to Danielle,

Margaret Mahy made me a criminal!

If anyone did that to a book of mine, I’d be awfully stern… and struggling to keep the grin off my mug. :) Which reminds me, I’ve got to start recovering my copies of Mahy’s YA novels from various not-as-young-as-they-used-to-be-lings. As a general rule, I NEVER loan out my books but things like The Changeover, The Tricksters and The Catalog of the Universe just wouldn’t stay put.

My mother is not, and never has been, a pirate but Mahy was one hell of a good witch.

One of my friends said “she’ll have an escort of 17 kings and 42 elephants”, and I didn’t even know which book she meant.

Oh, I love that so much -- it's such great fun to read out loud you don't really notice what a lovely piece poetic clockwork it is. Which you can say about a pleasingly high proportion of Mahy's writing. It's not just making the difficult look easy, but spontaneous.

  • Up Front: Let's Talk About Sex, Baby,

Well, except that, and I really cannot stress this enough, there’s actually nothing wrong with having sex for money.

I'd agree, but Milo knows full sodding well that where he lives and works having sex for money is a crime. Even on the level of moralistic hyperbole, it's a bit thick.

  • Up Front: Let's Talk About Sex, Baby,

Is there a difference between writing about sex for money and having sex for money? Not really. What a grubby, humiliating way to make rent.

Oh, Milo, you fuck-knuckle. Let me fix this for you by changing two words.

Is there a difference between writing about murder for money and committing murder for money? Not really. What a grubby, humiliating way to make rent.

Yes there is, Mr. Yiannopolous and I really think you know it.

  • Up Front: Let's Talk About Sex, Baby, in reply to Jackie Clark,

I do love his writing, but he is…..savage.

Yeah, I used to be a huge fan of Savage but there’s been some seriously disturbing shit going on (most recently some really dodgy advice advising a woman to withhold sex to bully her husband into losing weight) that doesn’t sit with me any more. Another thing, Dan -- bisexual men exist. Get the fuck over it, even if they're hogging all the cock.

  • Hard News: Good Intentions,

On a related note, Dan Salmon’s documentary, Pictures of Susan – the story of autistic “outsider artist” Susan King – is playing at this year’s film festivals.

Enormously fucked off this is the winner of the 2012 Irreconcilable Film Festival Scheduling Clash award. But one can hope that on the night TV3 is screening the broadcast version of Brother Number One in a non-graveyard slot (9.30pm), we might see more examples of FTA broadcasters getting that high quality local docos turn prime time lamestream into genuine mainstream.
