The addition of gimmick features are often a good indicator of a quality drop

See also stickers (Intel Inside! NXP Inside! Thingawammy XP2900!) on generic Windows laptops - Apple go to the opposite extent by removing features that are actually useful, but it keeps the product elegant.

  • Hard News: Paths and ways, in reply to Moz,

    A bit challenging to engineer:

    - to have a directly driven dynamo, you'd need it to have something to torque against. A hub unit would be obvious (driven from the skewer) but it would need an entirely custom hub and wheel.
    - you could maybe have a drive off a disk brake, but obviously this would depend on the disk in use.
    - the other option would be an inertial generator (a weight that stays put as the wheel spins)
    - or, maybe have magnets on the forks and a coil that picks up a pulse as it passes them

  • Speaker: Confessions of an Uber Driver…,

Are many Uber drivers GST registered now?

There are two possibilities with GST:
    - Either, as Uber pretend, they are supplying a service to the driver who treats independently with the passenger. In that case:
=> If the driver is *not* GST registered, Uber has to collect GST on their margin (as a supplier of a service from offshore).
=> If the driver *is* GST registered, Uber has no GST liability (assuming they can claim not to be trading in NZ, which is debatable). If the fare is ever over $50, the driver must provide a GST invoice

    - However, if Uber are actually providing a service using drivers as contractors (or employees), they are liable to collect GST (and claim it back when paid to GST registered drivers).

    Quite an interesting paper here.

One finding which might arise from such measurement is that the true level of drug use is higher than that estimated from surveys, and consequently the incidence of problematic use is lower than estimated.

  • Hard News: Greens drug policy 2: the…,

    - There is no middle ground between the government jailing people for selling or using a substance, and the government asserting a substance to be "safe".

    - The PSA explicitly excluded all proscribed substances (except analogues) from ever being approved. This removed from consideration a range of substances that have already been through the medical testing process.

    - The continuation of prohibition results in numerous harms itself because drug use is not prevented, but drug users are forced by definition into criminality.

I'd suggest, since a perfect, neat approach appears impossible, taking a pragmatic approach.

+ remove criminal penalties for all personal possession

+ remove jail as a sentence for any drug offence

+ make the unlawful sale or manufacture of drugs a regulatory rather than police issue, to be dealt with by local authorities and resourced according to the wishes of their communities

+ make the possession of drugs for testing purposes specifically legal, and make it a mitigating factor (smaller fine) if somebody selling drugs has had them tested and accurately labelled

Surely they should digitize the media and put it on two or three servers in different countries?

(Audio magtape might be good for thirty years. CDs, nobody really knows, and it depends on whether they're pressed or written, and using what media and technology: http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2014/08/18/340716269/how-long-do-cds-last-it-depends-but-definitely-not-forever).

And yes, rotating media or SSDs also have a life, but a properly set up online archive gets continually checked and errors corrected/devices replaced as they error and fail.
