  • OnPoint: D47: Dynamite!,

The village made its living by growing crops with the raw sewage. The sewage came through a number of open sewers, then flowed through irrigation channels and into the fields.

Hmmm, whoever would have thought to use decomposing organic matter on crops. They should have used compost instead. Can rice get AIDS? Snobby Dittmer Drive in Palmy is built on an old rubbish tip. Best thing to put on the land. Saves the topsoil for the farmers.

But, aye, the scale of it. You lucky man.

How does one get invited to one of these cannabis seizure burn-offs? Do they sell tickets for downwind seating?

Yes, the Domain is Heaven in the Orkland Hell, but what got me is the amount of people who drive through it as a thoroughfare. The council could earn a good sum of money putting a toll booth in the middle.

  • Yellow Peril: The thing you can't stand on.,

While campaigning on changing the flag, I was surprised with the general consensus out there; whatever you do, get rid of the Union Jack. Here's another little snippet here.

Span, I agree with your sentiment that changing the flag should be part of a greater constitutional change. However, talking about changing the flag is a good public conscience icebreaker. Perhaps changing the flag would increase the country's confidence on other constitutional issues such as having a head of state who spends more time in the country than, say, Sheryl Crow.

  • Hard News: I hope she does something interesting,

A US study may have identified a cheap, safe drug that kills most cancers. And it's not under patent.

Perhaps y'all could suggest a few more …

Well yes I can, Russell. One does readily spring to mind. People who use it have a lower incidence of cancer than non-users. It can, for example, shrink brain cancers and has been shown to be beneficial to liver cancer treatment. It also helps protect against Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, hardening arteries, glaucoma, migraine, epilepsy, schizophrenia, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, chemotherapy appetite loss, and well, lots of other things.

It has been tested on humans for at least 10,000 years without one recorded fatality. It is a near relative of hops, that goes into beer. New Zealanders are very good at growing it. An export business could print a lot of money for both the private and public coffers, a bit like Tasmania does growing opium.

Yet even if you are 67 with terminal cancer, it is illegal for your doctor to prescribe it. They can give you morphine but not cannabis. The Minister of Health has the power to grant medicinal cannabis permits. Not one has ever been issued. This, in an age when it's OK for doctors to give Ritalin to kids and Viagra to the impotent.

Met Turei is putting New Zealand's first ever cannabis bill before the House in May this year. It is asking a simple thing; that doctors have the ability to prescribe cannabis, (here's a medical sheet for it) just like they do already in Canada, Switzerland, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington State, California and Oregon.

I know it's rather short notice, but if you'd like to do something to support this, now's the time. The select committee is open to ideas, and a petition in support of medpot is available from me, NORML, or Billy at GreenCross. Tell your story to the select committee, or tell us your story and we'll pass it on.

We call out for members of the medical profession to write in support. Grass roots is all good, but the aura of experts lends bonus credibility for our lawmakers' consciences. We call on supporters from all political persuasions to lobby MPs to support at least a First Reading. Let's at least look at this.

    Cheers,

    Will

PS. If Teresa Gattung was feeling especially bitchy, she could always take Annette Presley's place at Slingshot and wipe the floor with her.

Jeez, what a choice. Colin James on the Treaty or the Great Blend? I'll reserve choosing until after the first gig tomorrow night. Worst comes to worst, I'll ditto with Che.

  • Southerly: Summer of The L.e.d.s,

Bravo dude. That was beautiful. Viva la rumba.

I get frustrated with Orkland the way I get frustrated with the Yanks. The Yanks, once reaching the pinnacles of liberal western thought thanks to the likes of Jefferson, etc have now devolved to the current primate. Orkland, with so much natural beauty yet shrouded in gaudiness. So much unrealised potential.

Orkland could well do with a few volcanic eruptions to wipe the slate clean. Say, the waterfront. I'd be happy with an eruption of cheers from Carlaw Park even. A lahar of light rail would do wonders, even it was a piddly thing linking the North Shore with the rest of the slopatropolis. If only someone could give a fuck.

I broke my lobbying virginity at the Brothels and Commercial Sex Premises Bylaw hearing up in Orkland when Banks was there. I happened to make the acquaintance of many fine ladies, as well as former city councillor Jon Olsen. We had much in common. He co-owned the building that had Showgirls, my favorite strip joint.

To paraphrase his thoughts on not standing for the last local bodies, he could only do one job well; his business or his public life. He could achieve more public good through his private life than anything within Auckland City Council.

This is not entirely the fault of the ACC. The Local Government Act 2002 has lumped a heap of paper and compliance crap at the local body level without giving them a fair model on how it's all going to be paid for. So they screw you where they can, regardless of fairness. Rates, parking wardens and service fees for Africa.

Everyone's got a million ways to spend money. Pity the poor buggers who have to foot the bill. Orkland needs some serious infrastructure investment and I can't see the ratepayers saying yes to increased rates to pay for it all.Consequentially Orkland remains a jellyfish instead of growing a backbone.

  • Yellow Peril: Pinoy ahoy,

My cable modem was installed by a Filipino called Sean de Jesus, in between jobs in Miramar and Upper Hutt (I like that; Sean, son of Jesus). It's all turned to shit in the Philippines since Cory Aquino and Fidel Ramos faded. Give the guys two years here, minimum, if for no other reason than for getting out there and trying. NZ needs more immigrants, and I'd choose a hard-working ethnic over a whingeing Brit any day.
