But I got the music bug by taping my mate's older brother's LPs and playing them endlessly.
me too, and theoretically you can still 'tape' a drm file, ie copy it analogue, 1 generation quality loss still very listenable.
or you could listen online on myspace pages etc.
I'm getting the music bug again from having access to music that local stores won't stock and radio won't play,
Buying it is another issue though as most of the myspace bands do not have infra structure set up to sell their music, yet. -
but I've been hearing about how DRM is going to be good for everyone from industry people for nearly a decade now, and it really hasn't been good for anyone.
so really the issue is that no ones come up with a good DRM system yet, not that the concept of DRM is flawed and we should rejoice its passing, (as possibly inferred by the title of this article)

I'm wondering why you think its a good stance to paint DRM as evil when in fact it is that the current versions of DRM are shit and constrict the legal purchasers rights to free maneuverability of their property.
do you want a free for all on digital property?
thats great for the end user but pretty much ensures the death of creative industries with production costs involved (music doesn't cost nothing to produce and if it is not rewarded with fair income and that income given legal protection then you're going to see a decline in quality, and a drop off in long term artists as those artists who've made their first recordings for the love of it can't justify continuing on the hard graft artist line for their whole life)Here's a suggestion for future technologies.
Music playing devices in the future have an id code.
A registered user registers their devices with the DRM people. You can register as many devices as you like so long as you don't take the piss.
The purchased music will be freely playable on said devices but not on any device not on your list. This means you can't give the track to a mate, but you can put it on any of your devices and play it.
that way you get pretty much complete freedom to do what you want with your purchased music as regards yourself, but you're not free to pirate the music. (you can of course play the music out of an audio output and re encode it suffering one generation of, digital to analogue, analogue to digital conversion.)
I don't think fairness is the motivating force for most of the proponents of no DRM though, correct me if I'm wrong.

after some little b*stard faked my email address in the "from" line
more importantly what are you going to do to get your emails into legitimate peoples inboxes now that your address has been added to multiple spam black lists.
how do you un black list your address to stop your messages getting filtered out erroneously as spam cos someone hijacked your identity? -
Ihug have been "fixing" their spam filter for about 4 months now, and you can no longer check the filtered emails online, they're just gone forever...
that seems a little dangerous. I've noted a number of isp's are filtering out legitimate mail and dumping it in the spam box.
who knows why this happens but the end result is that email is becoming an unreliable means of communication

I wasn't at all saying that all Cantabrians are racist, of course I wasn't.
yet what you said was
Are you saying that you can't come home because it's so racist here? I would suggest that's a Cantabrian thing (the racism).
Which quite clearly states you think the issue of racism in new zealand is confined to chch, or that areas outside of chch are in some way less racist.
The only reason I object to this is that it makes people think that if they're not in chch then they can ease up on their vigilance against racism cos "its not a problem here", its a problem in chch.
Im not defending chch at all, I'm just not letting any other locale off the hook either, not that I think "the problem" is racism so much as stupidity.
-
I thought the idea was more that there was a greater concentration of visible racist idiots there...
and my point was, based on what study?
its easy to call a place racist and absolve ones own place of living from said critcism, but truth is chch is no different from anywhere in nz, just that a few cases have come to light that have christchurch as their local.I don't bump into white supremacists in this city and don't find anyone more racist than any other city, I do find society on the whole to be developing some nasty trends, idiot yobbism and the degree to which we accept it, (related to our acceptance of bing drinking etc) our acceptance of a piss poor police force and their lame excuse that they shouldn't have to do their job properly or work hard at it cs they're underfunded.
none of this is of course going to make tamsin (are you JL's sister) or
tze ming want to hang around here but then she's a natural born kiwi and our societies problems are as much her responsibility to fix as anyone else's.Luckily just walking away is an option and a fair enough one too. I've done it once or twice and intend to do it again some time too.
Oarmaru is a pretty happening and cultured place at the moment though so there is hope.

concerns over disproportionately high levels of racism were more an issue in Canterbury than NZ in general.
sorry? what scientific study was that jackie was referring too.
was it the law of 'couple o people on the internet said it so it must be true'As a person that travels between the cities a lot I haven't noticed the general population of chch to be any more racist than any other city.
The dumb assed bogun do tend to make their presence felt more by driving round in noisy cars yelling at anyone and everyone. Those people exit in wellington too, but hang out in the hutt, and they exist in auckland but hang out in the ???? somewhere else and queen street.
Jackie's comment came across as an attempt to fob off accusations of racism on one area, there by implying that the rest of the country was pristinely clean.
you're never going to solve societies problems if you don't own up to them. (except when blaming timaru which is a fair call of course)
-
Is yelling offensive comments at someone because of their race worse than making qualified, obviously generalised observations about a broad area?
what was qualified about jackie's comment?
anyone would think a visit to chch will see you streets filled with jackboot wearing charlie chaplin mostachioe'd nazis as opposed to the free love and open vibe melting pot of every other city in the country.may I remind you that the traditional center for dim violent racists is timaru (when in doubt, pass the buck)
