  • Hard News: Real Gone,

For United Future I think you can't go past Supertramp.
Internal divisions, "sensible" voice ("The Logical Song"), vaguely religious message (e.g. most stuff off "Brother Where You Bound" and subsequent albums)
(actually I think The Herd's house band covered them?)

  • Up Front: Just Answer the Question,

    @hadyn: well, duuuuh :-)

but it's an "ought" question, not an "is" question...though your observation does raise the more important question:

1a/ Should stupid people be allowed to run for office?
...which potentially has far more impact on yer typical voter(as the optimal outcome "only for comedic value" seems quite hard to guarantee in practice).

But the only face-saving answer to 1. is, of course:
    --Why are you asking me?

  • Hard News: Rationalisation is at hand!,

    Far far upthread, Evan

once submitted a movie review of "Goodbye Pork Pie" to IMDb using the term hoon to describe Gerry [...] The yankee editors changed it to goon

    And it's still there!
In defense of IMDB, however, the movie does contain this exchange [on the streets of Wellington]:

John: Cut it out Gerry, they're not even looking at us.
Gerry: They are, they're looking at us.
John: They're looking at us now, you've crashed a red light, you goon.

By contrast, the word "hoon" doesn't appear once, which is a bit strange for a movie that was released in the US nearly three years after its local release (i.e., the script couldn't have been decided by impact on overseas sales).

(As it happens, I just had occasion to transcribe the entire thing for class use.)

  • Discussion: On Copyright,

    To be sure, Islander.
But even so, most of those cases -- yourself included, I think -- will be people whose lifestyle or personality are distinctive enough to be a marketable selling point for a new work, with or without the physical presence of the writer in the marketing process. (Not saying at all that this is necessarily a deliberate strategy, of course.) So Mark is right to that extent -- it matters that you do recognisable things *other* than write.

  • Southerly: Life at Paremoremo Boys' High,

children are oft times each others best teachers.

My school actually got a chance to put that to the test in 7th form chemistry.
There were two classes. One had a teacher throughout the entire year. For various reasons, my class had a rapid rotation of relievers (some very effective, others less so) and (for a few months) correspondence material. I filled in some of the gaps by writing digest notes for other students. My class had the higher average exam marks at year's end...
