If I had a suggestion re benefits, it would be the opposite of cutting. No point asking people to do stuff they can't afford.

My parents read books, mentioned books they enjoyed, had books all round the home. As did my grandparents
Ae, same for me, and I'm doing my best to recreate that for my wee one, I read to her at least one book in English each day and make sure my wife reads to her as much as possible in Chinese. Result: the wee one loves books. And I've seen, read, and heard plenty to confirm that getting them hooked on books goes a long way towards getting them hooked on learning. Now, if we could persuade this government to drop their nonsensical half-baked excuses for policies and put all that money into getting parents reading to their kids...

OnPoint: Because Statistical Rigour, in reply to
At the recent Autism NZ conference, Tony Attwood mentioned that he now reckons that 100% of kids on the autism spectrum experience bullying.
I read an op-ed piece (i.e., to be taken with an appropriate grain of salt) discussing the case of a mildly autistic boy down in Shenzhen who had been refused entry to his local school simply because the staff and parents of the other children were scared of him. Some parents had even organised a petition to keep him out of school. The author then argued that overseas (国外/guówài - frequently code for 'in Western, developed countries') kids like him would be accepted into the mainstream system. Sigh.

I fondly remember lots of kereru flying around North East Valley and Opoho when I lived in Dunedin. Beautiful birds. Don't recall them killing trees, but then again, most of my life has been pretty nomadic...

piwakawaka has at least twenty other names?
20?! wow! And 'at least'. I note that the two other names you posted are just as melodious as piwakawaka. I hope the others all are, too.

I showed my wife. Her choices were piwakawaka (she loves the sound of its name, the way it so joyfully rolls off the tongue) and kea, I told her to chose one. The one she saw in action and, even more impressively, in video at Rainbow Springs won. "Kea because they're so smart!" she said.

That flying fox looks very much like the one at the former Salvation Army Camp Akatarawa. I had a lot of fun on that as a kid.

A piece in thursday’s Press declared several times that photography is “all about light”.
Well, yes, of course. But allow me to point you all in the direction of a friend and colleague who seems to have a particular talent for light. And nudes – nuffin NSFW anywhere civilised, but just so you know.
