The cliffs remind me a bit of Torbay, but I presume it’s further south than that.
good spotting, it's the cliffy beaches just beyond Takapuna, St Leonards etc. a real contrast to the swarms at Takapuna itself.

Dead crab in a rock pool
Also saw a seagull feasting on a dead eel, only to have it snatched away by a gaggle of small boys. Later we came accross the eel again, this time being buried on the busy inner city beach by small boys.

Would love to see the book re-printed ……
This building (now housing The Corner Store bar) features in the book as the Kozy dairy, stationer and dry cleaning, with a hoisery and underwear shop next door. Tho I think the sportscar parked outside may have been the main event….
