  • Hard News: High Noon,

Which is how, the on the whole, RIANZ and their proxies come across.

Please, can we not make these blanket swings. Chris is nobody's proxy, and more than almost anyone I know is an advocate who has taken on the members of the RIANZ over artist related copyright issues.

Just because he may disagree with you doesn't make him anyone's lackey or proxy.

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

With kind permission from Simon Grigg

I guess I'll never get invited into RIANZ again

  • Hard News: High Noon,

Bob? No! I'm absolutely shaken. I loved his posts and, especially his pointers towards books and much else.

I didn't ever have the privilege to meet the man but thought very highly of him as a result of our paths crossing at PA. My thoughts, too, go out to his family.

  • Hard News: Blackout Bingo!,

I think it's more that *all* Americans (who have heard of New Zealand) seem to think of it as this distant, mostly-white paradise with exquisite scenery, friendly natives

Well, almost without exception in NY over the past few weeks, Americans I met (and there were a few) or simply encountered, actually had a fairly good grasp of who and what NZ is and it's racial mix.

Then again, that was NY, where they tend to regard all non-5 boroughs dwellers as odd and irredeemable

Overall, nearly two thirds of Americans still reject the theory of evolution

In the wonderful American Natural History Museum they have a very comprehensive, extraordinarily concise and understandable walkthrough of evolution which includes input from a selection of scientists who believe in a divine creator but argue evolution. Having spent an hour or so there last week, surrounded by Lucy and so much more, I was bemused by the meatheads in the New Jersey jackets at the end of it who were, without telling us exactly why, espousing it loudly as 'all bullshit'.

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

Parts of it are way sustainable. APRA had its best year ever last year.

Copyright incomes from synchronisation rights, performance rights and publishing are fine. Selling stuff is harder -- but that's in part because other forms of deriving money from the ownership of music copyrights have flourished.

Indeed, which is why so much of the RIANZ argument is lame. It's swings and roundabouts and pretty much all the major publishers are owned by the same corporates who own the labels.

Adjust and stop whinging you fuckers....

That said, having just returned from 2 1/2 weeks scouring rekkid shops in the tri-state area, the indie shops who supply niche seem to be doing pretty well. I just wish I still bought vinyl.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

Actually, I get kind of pissy when people ascribe arguments and positions to me that are not borne out by the evidence. Keep that in mind and we'll be fine.

Actually I got kinda pissy when you ascribed positions and opinions to me that I'd never espoused and then proceeded, regardless of what I said, to rather arrogantly attack those.

It seems to be something that you've happily repeated with others here, which is pretty much why I opted out of this thread.

    Just sayin'

I shall now disappear again. Pufffff.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

Hey Simon, I'm very happy for him, but frankly, so what? Here he was, acknowledging that one part of his business operated at the expense of the other part, and advising customers to break the law. What's not to laugh?

You're only as good as your last hit, and he clearly never understood the Internet, or the implications of what he was selling. Time to move on.

To be honest Mark, Mike Gladding could probably buy and sell your understanding of the internet as relates to music copyright several times over. I'm sorry if that sounds snippy but he's been at the coalface of copyright law as relates to the recording industry for twenty years, admittedly part of that time as the Chairman of an industry organisation. You are kinda making wild, and quite unsubstantiated swings (as you are prone to do) and I'd respectfully suggest that a slightly less arrogant and smug tone would do you wonders.

    Just a thought.

    kumara

We discovered pretty quickly that it's exact facsimile is pretty freely available here, known, in SEA at least, as Japanese Sweet Potato. The taste and look is identical.
