Actually, I actually sat on that post for about an hour thinking "Emma or Russell will post something, any minute now. Russell will definitely post. I should hold off." When it got to 8.30 NZT and still no Radio Free Russell, I assumed Rangitoto had opportunistically taken out Auckland.
Can't a mummy and daddy have some special cuddles time on a Saturday morning?
I was just getting to grips with the idea that the earth had actually moved,
As special a place as you hold in my heart, Russell, that. my dear, was just TMI. Even in jest.

I thought twitter was a fantastic way of making sure people were okay - it was lovely to have that communal anxiety and then relief. I had TVOne on all day as well as sitting at the Mac keeping on top of it. I made one phonecall to a friend who was not online at all the entire time, and funnily enough, found that disquieting. I suppose people were texting her, but I found the online thing more immediate.

I wish I could quote some lyrics from our lovely Mahinaarangi Tocker. She was a brilliant lyricist.

The other thing I noticed was that it felt like Christmas in some ways.
Lots of people on the street chatting and friendly and no traffic - people couldn't shop or watch TV so they talked to each other - lots of phone calls from people checking in.
The Blitz spirit. Lovely. As I said to a woman in the supermarket today when I let her go ahead of me, and she told me how kind - if Cantabrians can deal with a major earthquake with civility and calm, the least the rest of us can do is be nice to each other. At least for a while, before we forget how important our fellow human beings are.

And what a shame that will be for them! In the old days, we would have been quite anxious to get to school to see all our mates and catch up, now I guess they all text like mad anyway.

A friend of mine who lives at Waimairie Beach has a teen who goes to Avonside Girls. I don't think they'll be going to school next week. Big cracks across the playing fields apparently.....

The whiskey is safe! Huzzah! (can't stand the bloody stuff, but happy for those who love it.)

I have to say, Sofie, that if there were a civil emergency here, I would so be walking up the road to your place.

Oh darling - the biggest hugs ever.

@Emma - baking bread? You, madam, are a goddess.
