  • Hard News: The Politics of Absence,

We like to laugh at the Fox News syndrome in America.

HAHAHAHA- how can they think Iraq was behind the twin tower attacks???

    Those crazy yanks.

But voters think overwhelmingly (I think it was 75%) that Auckland City was at fault for the debacle at the start of the cup.

I was equally disturbed to see about 60 % of Green Voters and National Voters actually want the other to go into coalition with each. It's almost as if their policies don't matter or exist.

Haven't they been following the local government democracy seizures, the clean water, the SOEs, the job creation, the minimum wage, the CGT tax or do none of those things really matter?

We are getting dumber, and we're about to get less media: no NZPA, less public service tv

  • Hard News: The Minister's Brain Has Exploded,

All of which suggests that it is purely petty politics from McCully.

And we got a lazy 'the Government has stepped in' narrative from the TVNZ news. Oh and TV3 listed McKay as 'Auckland Council'.

  • Hard News: The Minister's Brain Has Exploded,

Well I think what Veolia has to apologise for- and this for regular train commuters may well be familiar- it is to me anyway- is a lack of information and explanation being given to commuters on trains. How their staff are trained to deal with system failure from a customer service and customer safety point of view. How they communicate with trains and public about delays.

The estimate of 15K is clearly low and it will be interesting how they got it.

But overall most people I know had a ball and were amazed. I think it was great the number of Aucklanders that got out to downtown, a real festival atmosphere, though I did leave fairly early on and had no problems using public transport to get around.

seemed the ultimate in horse race journalism, at a time when there were so many other angles to go with.

  • Hard News: London's Burning,

Incredibly impressed with this piece from the Herald's editor of news.

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=10744282

A key point is the weakening of the ability to be socially mobile by getting an education and the lack of focus on unemployment.

and I was absolutely horrified by this statistic

"There are 400-odd unemployed people for every job advertised in Tottenham, many of those part-time shop or cleaning work for minimum wage."

Be good to hear more about the key planks of a happy, cohesive social democracy and how we need to retain them in NZ. Couple of boot camps'll fix it, right? F"@£$ off.

  • OnPoint: Why Rightwingers Should Support…,

With the Greens and Norman coming out strongly on the CGT are we going to see a common desire for a focus on the productive side of the NZ economy push towards a new government, with perhaps some of that investment going towards NZ companies creating greener technologies for export?

we wanna be more than 100% more than other countries!

  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea..., in reply to Damian Christie,

My guess or hope is next week we'll see some specifics- the actual numbers, the details of the policy, discussion of who exactly the policy will affect and how the policy will work and hopefully a general philosophy from Labour to place this within- so far- help the weakest (fruit and vege, tax free threshold), and get our assets working for us to create growth and jobs.

  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea...,

Sorry this may be pointed out already- I'm just going to read through the responses, but I think it is wrong to suggest that Key is dictating the discussion over it.

Commentators are, and also most people seem to have a good idea about what it is, and are forming their own ideas.

For me Key's response feels like knee-jerk scaremongering.

I think this is some good politicking from Labour, and it would be nice for it to stay that way until they next get elected, and well after that.
