Just seen the only intro to Media 7, a long add for iPad and a TVNZ App store application.
Now I understand why Russell is re-writing internet history (I snorted coffee when I read about Apple heroically pushing HTML5...especially the video bit).
It might be helpful when writing "iReviews" to note your commitments to Apple, Russell. I had no idea but now that I do I will refrain from commenting on these particular articles.

It'll be Apple that drags everyone else through to HTML 5 too
No, that would be Firefox and our very own Rob O'Callaghan. But happy for you to forget a Kiwi's contribution to this as I realise he doesn't wear black.
Honestly, Apple does lovely tech...but that is only a part of the story and the lack of appreciation of the long term damage there appraoch will do is saddening. They could do lovely tech *and* be open (not source, just open) but they don't.
Think IE5 if you must. That was nearly the end of the Internet until Firefox cam along.

:-) giovanni, that's not what I said, was it?

Ok, I bow to the group's sanguine view on Apple. May you never need to jailbreak and may Apple never request to have you disconnected from the interwebs as a result of your disobedience.

I didn't think balance would be hard to ask for here, but as I find elsewhere, if it is asked in respect to Apple products and behaviour it is never as well received request.

s Apple morally obligated to also keep its environment open?
Apple can do whatever they want. I find it strange though that seemingly sane people complain about the control freakery of a minor politician in a minor country whilst lauding the praises of Apple's control which goes way beyond anything Rodney could dream up.

But I think it is noteworthy that the App Store model has drawn in literally thousands of small developers who hadn't previously had access to a global market. That's why others are looking to emulate it.
Didn't the Internet do that? Did you hear about Freshmeat? Have you read the analysis of $$s made on the App store? It's 2/10th of fuckall for the total effort that goes in.
Come on, we all know Apple makes nice kit but the hype goes beyond all reason, and this isn't a revolution they are leading, in many may ways they are taking backwards steps and a good journalist / commentator would point that out.

while you can't buy porn at the App Store
Oh great. Now you have pushed me from disappointment to anger.
I didn't think Russell would resort to the "you're all dirty pornographers" argument at those concerned with openness and how much control is exerted over users and by proxy to the Internet by manufactures like Apple.
Russell, what were you doing with your iPad that made you blind?

That's really not the same thing as electing a city council.
This is true, hardly anyone is affected by Auckland's woes.
But with the technology debate going on now and the way different companies would like to manipulate our Internet and communications usage, many 100s of millions are affected.

Hi recordari
Would be interested in your case study...there are techniques for making the formatting issues easier to handle, though you probably know them all.
Can you contact me off list?

Russell, I am not angry, just disappointed.
Let's get back on topic, Rodney Hide and the Super City. I think Hide's doing the right thing controlling all the CCO appointments and managing the roll out without input the useless local politicians and businbody citizens.
Any other approach would lead to a degradation in user experience for Aucklanders, and that is to be avoided at all costs,
