  • Hard News: Only rock 'n' roll,

You have A Flock of Seagulls live link too?

'I Ran' was a hit, yes, but they had much better songs!

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

Oh, and here's a vote for teh container port - I actually like the physical look of it. The ships are cool, the hum of the port.

I live overlooking all this and am constanty seeing pieces of crap that are passed off as building littering the waterfront area.
The stadium would add to that but er, I couldn't actually see it if it WAS built...

    Why?
We have this thing called 'Vector Arena' that has been built down on what real estate agents love to call 'Parnell'. It too is an ugly piece of crap that blocks out decent views of the port area (for me).

A grey monolith surrounded by poorly designed 'apartment blocks' soon to host such great cultural events like 'Supernova'.
    Nice.

Dick Hubbard (dick being the clear adjective) has harped on about roping in the dismal asthetics of Auckland city yet all this crap keeps popping up...

Fire, fire, fire - no aiming!
And even then the firing is done with a blindfold.

I didn't like John 'Harley' Banks but Mr. Hubbard is just coming off plain scary these days - like the weird woman who had the gingerbread house....

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

Spend the money on getting Auckland's transport sorted out or some other worthy cause.

Hold the rugby game at Jade Stadium in Christchurch.
Such a lovely town for all the tourists to visit etc....
    :/

These guys should know by now that budget blowouts on construction projects are de rigeur. $500 mill? Double it.

Seems that a bunch of people are trying build some kind of monument to themselves and have lost sight of reality.
Like a bunch of crazed boy-racers frothing over the latest blowoff valves and doing anything to have one.

Imagine buying yourself a huge-azz plasma TV set costing $20k for the sole purpose of having your mates come over and watch one rugby game on it. Ever.
Meanwhile your family goes without food, your car gets reposessed and your poodle dies of self-strangulation because you couldn't afford to get it a haircut.

    That's my analogy!

    lol

  • Hard News: Only rock 'n' roll,

Just don't let them (the Checks) get on the cover of the NME.
Seems to be the kiss of death for any band.

Besides, to we need that stale old rag to tell us how good a band (NZ bands in particular) is?

The cover of the NME is not the measure of NZ tax-payer dollars.

  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

Renaissance have always been at the end of the food chain. They have never really been any good at small customer support.
I agree that Ubertec are one of the best Apple reatilers in NZ (well, Auckland anyway). They are still at the mercy of Renaissance though...

An Apple Store in NZ would be cool. Having been to Apple Stores in Santa Monica and the Beverly Centre in Hollywood I found them to be a great retail set up. Even for a long time user (read: not that excitable anymore) like myself, I found them lots of fun, if nothing else.
I bought few accessories at the stores but I actually bought my MacBook Pro from Mac Warehouse in LA. The store itself was low rent, the sales staff on Lithium but I got it for $200 US cheaper than the Apple Store. Go figure. The likes of Ubretec will still have a place.

More often than not the big chain stores that sell Apple product in NZ have little knowledge of the product. It's similar to the situation that Renaissance had in the late 90s where they would have an 'Apple Expo' and only have three PowerMacs on display with 128MB of RAM. With none of the machines running any useful software you couldn't actually see what these new models could do!
    Pointless.

My prediction for iTunes is this:
The iTunes NZ music store will open within the next 10 days.
The local music industry would rather take a smaller cut of something than no cut of nothing. The current industry is sufferring to the point where majors are working three times as hard to sell the same amount of product as they were previously. Titles that would have sold 50,000 units s a few years back are struggling to sell 7,500 units (gold).

Moderator's note: The author has asked me to snip out a little bit here about a forthcoming service from Vodafone that was (a) based on confidential information and, (b) wasn't what he thought it was anyway. RB.
