  • Hard News: Herself's Turn,

The trouble is, Geoff, you'd be relying on managers to make the decision. The plague of managers and the spread of the the deadly disease managerialism is so widespread it's now in charge of itself at all levels. Academics running the academy? Ha!
It should be business 101 that a manager is someone who doesn't actually produce anything.
The inflation in the qualifications has a lot of ramifications. We were told recently that NZ has the highest rate of tertiary take-up 76%- in the world.
Managers took over and they did what they do: they grew the business in dollar terms. No thought for educational need, and quality? That's the job of the branding team, you moron.
So now what's the aim? Universal student debt, it seems.
    Who, bitter, me?

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

Jessica S- you may have Coleridge on your side:

That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

Samuel T wasn't exactly aiming for strict rhymes or metre, but worth trying that on yr dad!

Gilliam Welch has a song called "Everything's for
free" that sums this debate up well- from the musicians' side. AND it's one of the better songs- (wistful, beautiful, true!) on one of the best albums of the last decade :-)... which you can DL perfectly legally from emusic, here, or indeed you could get their entire catalogue as your 50 free dl incentive to join!

FWIW I can't download The Clean anthology from emusic- it says it's "not available in your country (NZ)".
The Roy Montgomery tracks seem to dl ok though.

psst- someone provided me with a crack of logic platinum 5. To be fair on myself, I didn't ask for it- I just bought a emagic soundcard and the guy threw in a disc with a remarkable amount of cracked software.
I don't use it. I love logic- I have a paid-for versions- but the new dongle you need to run it does have me stumped. It's called a mac or something and they cost thousands...

Some great commentary on The Register!
Have a read, robbery: eg "the world's dumbest filesharer" (warning, extensive use of the term "freetard"), AT&T talking cautiously about packet-sniffing, an article on the trend towards encrypting torrents- as well as the strange case of QTrax/SpiralFrog.
It's a weird wired world, etc.

Steven- that's the wildest holiday story of the season. You've certainly been through the mill! And remarkable luck with Vitamin Sea.
It reminded me of the story of one of the yachts in the (infamous) Tonga race (I think that's what it was). The couple were rescued by a French naval vessel after several 360s, and managed to convince the skipper not to sink her. And the boat turned up on some island in Fiji, I think, ashore on the sands in remarkably good condition.
At any rate: wheew! 50 knots (gusting to who knows?) is a biiiig wind for a 6 metre boat...

most computer literate people like we all should be will find ways to do our stealing, the rest will comply with the system.

It only takes one person to put a copy on the net, tho. You don't seems to get that it's a double problem: stopping people getting it off a disc or other medium and stopping people then sharing the non-drm files via the net.
With regard to the Oscar movies: it has surprised me to see review copies of new movies turn up on the net. this is obviously intended to get around that- or at least slow it down. But that's a problem- and a solution- that works ok (for a while?) to protect copies you're giving away to people you're prepared to give the technology to. I don't see how it could translate to consumer sales.
OTOH... you're right about how the ipod (software?) has been re-jigged. And vista was supposed to be a big move towards protecting drm. I saw a notice somewhere that MS are now offering people a special disc so they can "downgrade" their new vista machine to xp. Heh!
