there is only one loan word in that speech, all the other words are original, solid, old English words. The loan word? Its from French, and its "surrender."
?
you are kidding right? "surrender" [takes out oxford concise dictionary]... is a... middle "english" word taken from the french during the time they pwned, and owned, the anglo-saxons.
that said, i agree. churchill knew the value, and power, of propaganda.

that article juha links to is pretty damn funny. a good cop turned to helping stoners evade the law.
[the reformed cop's] received a lot of negative attention since the Tyler Morning Telegraph first broke the story
i lived in oil-rich tyler for a fair old while when in texas. it's not far from where the reformed cop lives. the entire town and surrounding country was still dry in 2001 (ie no booze).
but man... if you were the sort of person looking for it... there was allegedly some crazy, crazy drugs in that town. most of them consumed by rich republican's kids.

I thought it was the foreigners?
throwing a rock-a-hula-tiki party isn't going to help...
who's idea is it to encourage all those foreign ideas anyhow...

Forget first request.
if this article is reliable, we have 152,000 claims for disability from iraq and afghanistan, with 12% of soldiers having served suffering post-traumatic stress.
1500 soldiers are recognised as 'permanently disabled'.
here's another report on PTSD.
-
Another reminder that the death toll from this war (or any war) is only the begining of the horror
very true. people have long been pointing out that current body armour doesn't protect hands, feet, digits, or limbs.
anyone have stats on US soldiers permanently disabled in iraq?
There's still big shortages in various areas around the country, particularly the building trade
anyone care to source the real reason for inflated house prices?

Mr Oil, a well-fed Auckland Grammar boy if the truth be known
[shocked look!!]
snigger.... so he's actually wearing chambrey and boat shoes.
if sonic actually gets jumped in a dark alley in the next few weeks, at least whale will be well-dressed when he's charged as the primary suspect.

i'm loving this "in a real pub you'd get knocked on your ass" line from whaleoil...
funny as all hell. i'm not interested in starting this chain up here, but.... "heavy blogger" + "working man's pub"?
doesn't really gel, does it?
-
rofl at the wikipedia comment. only proves sonic's original point.
and well... wish i could view what's going on at whaleoil, but my home URL appears to have been denied permission shortly after i made my comments. presumably for calling whale an 'idiot'. goes to show, best response to a bully is laughter.
can anyone tell me if the comment where i say, "you asked for my opinion.." made it past the "moderators"?

what's so great about "little miss sunshine"? from the promo stuff it appears to be about a precocious brat...
nah, the premise is "dysfunctional family are forced into a small space and learn to get along".
it's heartwarming if not ever-so-slightly cheesy.
the heroin-sniffing grandfather teaching the wee girl her performance for the beauty pagent is funny, and a great comment on what those pagents are actually all about.

put all those troublesome kids in the army. that'll sort them out.
