  • Speaker: It's meant to be hard,

Wyoming was the first state in the world to allow women to vote, in 1869.

According to Wikipedia, it's really not that simple :-)

  • Hard News: Right This Time?,

I'm even prepared to smile ruefully at David Farrar's airy declaration yesterday that "Labour did not need to panic and legislate," in 2003.

    They didn't need to legislate.

    They could have appealed.

I'm not sure why it has a USB port then. I have yet to discover a use for it.

  • TVNZ7 Bill English promo,

Does it promote the National Party?

    Anyone have a view?

  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

As for Eric Keley's supposed "lack of awareness of the historical context" on Morning Report today, he unsurprisingly wasn't having a bar of insinuations that TVNZ7's news and current affairs operation was not only grossly partisan -- but as Graeme has rather nicely pointed out, broke the law.

I did not point out that this ad broke the law.

I asked a question - for those who've seen the thing (I probably have it on my FreeVo somewhere) - "did it promote the National Party?".

If the answer is "yes", then it broke the law. If the answer is "no", then it hasn't. I haven't answered my question, won't until I've seen the thing, and may not even then...

Craig - Electoral Commission. You can complain to the police, but they'll just send you there, or refer it to the Commission themselves.

  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

The English thing seems pretty legit - apparently TVNZ7 is running a pretty wide-ranging "Focus on the Economy" theme.

It does. I'm not looking at this from a "political interference" perspective - Plain English is a pretty obvious tag-line, I cannot see TVNZ7, TVNZ News putting up with any strong-arming from the Deputy PM to name it to advertise his resurgent local electorate newsletter.

I don't believe it's a BSA matter, or an ASA matter, but I did have a question - not having seen the whole ad - whether there might be Broadcasting Act concerns - similar to those that got Shane Jones and Winston Peters in trouble hosting talkback last year. If the promo is seen as "advocat[ing] support for a ... political party", then it is illegal to air it.

    Standing up and calling bullshit

And here was me expecting a column on the "You Lie" guy...

I note that banner ads to support Plain English are running on this site.

Indeed. I trust you don't really expect me to ban them ...

The banners? No. I've not seen the whole ad, but does anyone who has think that it advocates support for a candidate or for a political party?

Just asking, y'know, as someone who's done a bit of work with Part 6 of the Broadcasting Act :-)

PS: This week's Media7 looks at children's media -- and children's TV in particular.

Someone should talk about the awesomeness that was The Lost Children. Maddigan's Quest got all the press, but this was fantastic television (too?). With some nice use of Māori language in mainstream programming as well.

  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

its as irrelevant to the US Senate as state governors are to Congress.

State Governors (tend to) appoint temporary replacement Representatives, and Senators following death or resignation...

  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

The question I remember went something like "Congress is to gubernatorial as senate is to ...?"

I think the answer to that question would be "gubernatorial", but it really makes no sense.

The All Blacks are to Kevin Rudd, as the All Blacks Front Row is to ...?
