As a Dunedinite, I recommend you catch "I'm Not Harry Jenson"; a slow-building but effective Kiwi flic on at the Rialto. Has had zilch publicity (except on-line) and I fear it could sink without trace--I was the sole audience member at a screening today.

Just as an aside--I am in Dunedin Wed-Friday and I notice that Marianne Dissard (with Flip Grater & Delany Favidson) are playing there on Thursday night. Worth going to, do you reckon?

A pretty inoffensive Campbell Live clip, in the main. There was a legitimate story there and the topless woman had a cause to promote (sort of half-way to becoming a naturalist). The only disturbing element was from the woman from Family Fist, who loomed like some ugly black cloud. Where did she appear from--from under a rock? Popped out of sewer pipe?? Perhaps also the nongs who wittered 'what about the children??"

I watched an old Band documentary recently and decided that I would like to be adopted by Levon Helm.
I saw that one too--along with one on Janis Joplin (dipsy) and another on Buddy Holly (especially interesting on the events leading up to the plane crash). All on the Documentary Channel?
What was particularly interesting about The Band was how 'organic' their music was, in that they did not appear to listen to other music, nor actively search for references. The doco was a little coy about Richard Manuel's suicide (have you ever heard "Richard Manuel" by Drive By Truckers?)

...and exotic pork pies and tantalising toad-in-the-hole. Incidentally, I caught a portion of a programme the other night, about improving the fare at Little Chef roadside 'restaurants' in the UK. That would be an uphill battle. I had possibly the worst meal in my life at one near Nottingham a couple of years back.

Drumming. Hmm! There is good (Gene Krupa, Ginger Baker) and bad (bongos and those tedious drum solos we had to suffer through in the 1970s--and in some live concerts today, when every member of the backing band has to have their 5 minutes of audience attention*). In the Waikato, we have the Waitako Drummers, who are influenced by Japanese traditions and something quite special. So are Pacific Island hollow trunk drums.
* in respect of the Al Green concert last Thursday, such attention was deserved, with such a tremendous backing band.

Am I the only person who sees massive parallels between Glee and Ryan Murphy's earlier attempt at high school satire in Popular?
Freaks and Geeks, too? Interesting that parents I have talked to tend to like Glee more than their offspring (such is the case in our family). Maybe it is how adults would like teens to be--articulate, talented, forgiving and fun?

Weird though, to find out just beforehand that two guys were punching it out in the Al Green audience during the Opensouls support set. WTF?
The eyewitness report I heard was that one inebriated munter was calling for Opensouls to pack up and finish and a neighbouring munter took exception and a scuffle resulted, with a drunken girlfriend weighing in.
Personally, I think the Opensouls went on for rather too long. The lead vocalists just didn't have enough colour or range to carry the songs (even though she had volume).
