Actually my problems started after exercise

I’ve noticed that most of my aches and pains have actually become less as I get further and further from a body trained for sport.

My issue was slightly different, since it was definitely really bad posture immediately after getting my back all warm and flexible.

It's been long known that triathletes suffered fewer injuries than long distance runners, that led directly to cross training.

    @Hebe
For me it was Yoga and the discovery that I had become quite inflexible over the years. But it doesn't happen quickly - it's a long term solution slowly building better flexibility and gaining strength in those little balance muscles and more even strength across all parts of the core in particular.

Also like Tai chi, yoga has an element of stress relief - it's hard to be worried about work when all you can think about is how much longer do I have to hold this pose without falling over and looking stupid.

I alternate between standing and sitting as comfortable

Yeah I have to change position a lot as well.

Actually my problems started after exercise - I'd go for a run or ride and then after getting my body all warm and loose I'd slouch on the couch. My warm back would bend into a really really bad position ... followed by whimpering on the floor :(.

I have been in the construction industry for over 40 years

The impression I got was that if the folks doing the surveys had the qualifications they would have the requisit knowledge to do it properly. Not that it was impossible to do it properly without the certificate that says you know what you were doing.

Moreover, he was objecting to actually experiencing the unqualified folks who were doing the surveys doing an inadequate job. If the unqualified people had being doing a good job I don’t think you’d have got the same response.

    “professional self importance”

Um the guy has had many years of training and many years of practice. This makes his opinion more valuable thhan that of someone without such training and experience.

Much the same way you tend to take the medical advice of an actual doctor ahead of that given by your painter.

That does not mean he cannot be wrong nor does it say he is a better human being than any other. However, his training and experience mean his opinion in his field of expertise should be considered more useful and valuable.

  • Southerly: Now I Am Permitted, in reply to David Haywood,

    read this hair-raising piece

What seems so sad about this whole saga is that after the initial humane response, there seems to have been a progressive shift to a mode where the people responsible (they're responisible because they took money to be responsible) for correcting the damage are doing everything in their power to avoid that responsibility.

If I were a cynical person I might suggest that some rich bastards are simply doing what they always do and avoiding if at all possible any situation that requires them to pay anything. While at the same time using the disaster as justification for charging more. A cynical person might describe that as disgustingly greedy profit from other people loss. An even more cynical person might suggest that some politicians are being persuaded to support that greed. A cynical person might suggest that the inspectors being employed are being encouraged, perhaps even by bonuses, to minimise costs. Luckily such cynicism is far too extreme to reflect reality.

Awesome to hear you've finally reached a point where you can slow down. I look forward to reading more husband and wife exploits.

I put down 37.5 tonnes of pavers and had not a twinge of back pain. Can anyone explain how this is possible when I can’t sit in a chair for ten minutes without being in agony?

My guess, from agonizing personal experience, is that when putting down pavers you adopt good posture and use your core muscles to support your back. Any load is evenly and symmetrically distributed ... because if you try it any other way you can't bloody lift the pavers.

When you sit, my guess, again from personal experience, you relax and slouch, pushing your lower back into a curve that creates asymmetrical stress on your back pushing the discs slightly out of the space between your vertebrae and placing pressure on the nerves that exit the spine at that point. Eventually you create enough pressure that the nerves cause the muscles in your back to spasm, pulling your back further out of alignment and placing more pressure on the nerves resulting in excriciating pain that leaves you pathetically wibbling on the floor.

Short term solution, painkillers and anti inflammatories. Medium term solution, sit up straighter. Long term solution regular stretching and twisting exercises for the back that create more space and strengthen the muscles that support the spine.
