  • Hard News: When "common sense" isn't, in reply to Maz,

The assumption is that, coming from a country with a comparable system of driver testing like Denmark, a driver has already demonstrated competence and just needs to understand what's different about NZ.

    I didn't get the question:
Most NZ roadusers, whatever the vehicle are:
    1. Dicks
    2. Anally retentive dicks
    3. Agressive anally retentive dicks
    4. Agressive anally retentive dicks with an entitlement complex

but I'm sure it must be on there as essential data.

In any case, I'm sure the roads would be much safer if we had aviation standards of driver and vehicle licencing. 100 hours with an observed instructor, all cars to be dual controlled with a more experienced driver in command for the first ten or so years, retests every year or less, etc.

Also, we'd starve for lack of food deliveries.

In any case, you might think driving is a privilege to be conferred ona grateful subject, but I suspect that a majority of NZers consider it a right, and until you replace the voting system by some system with votes proportionate to the amount of lycra you own, it'll stay that way.

I'm sure that having two people's electronic tags on ones person would be easily detectable and lead to an extended spell in the Gulag, comrade.

Not to mention that in the brave new world where every citizen/subject is a policeman, armed with a constantly running enforcement camera, determination of anyone's transgressions will be easily detected. Stopping one's government mandated 30 minutes exercise a bit early, eating more than one sweet snack a week, drinking more than 4 units in a night.

Jeremy Bentham would have loved it.

people have to cycle for a period

How on earth would you enforce that? Would there be patrols logging who was cycling and you'd have to have so many stamps to qualify to move up to a motorbike, with the same thing before you moved on to a car?

illegal to SELL a bike without a helmet

What about all the people that already have a helmet, or are buying a second bike, or intend to securely fix the bike to the rack on their SUV as a lifestyle totem and not ride it, ever?

I saw someone the other day wearing a helmet in a car. I assumed they were an exceedingly bad driver, either expecting to crash frequently or indeed planning a deliberate collision.

    Common sense is neither.

Have any coroners bright ideas on how death can be abolished been successfully implemented? It seems to me that coroners should go back to their main judicial function of determining whether a death involves potential culpability and leave policy to the political/professional arena.

Interestingly, at the time of the 4th amendment, pretty much everywhere in the settled parts of the US was within 100 miles of the "border" (which includes the coastline). Obviously the framers didn't intend it to apply at all, or relied on the hidden 0th amendment (everything herein only applies to white anglo-saxon protestant males).

Also, whenever I fly to New Munster (as I recently discovered the South Island was originally named), it's on a puddle jumper.

They don't have any security, so you could climb on tooled up like something out of a Quentin Taratino movie and nobody would bat an eyelid (provided the RPG or whatever was small and light enough for the overhead locker).

  • Hard News: The Wogistan form book, in reply to Emma Hart,

That is actually the international rule. I assume the rationale is that if your lighter was ignited in your pocket, you'd notice your pants on fire and do something about it fairly rapidly. If in a bag, it may not be noticed until smoke and flame started to come from the overhead locker, which is undesirable in flight.

I think he considers that angry white men (even bearded ones) would never engage in acts of terrorism.
