  • Hard News: And meanwhile ...,

why not take a sample from every new-born child, just in case?

We already do. It's called the heel prick test. We've been storing blood from every newborn dried on a card since the 1970s. As far as I know there has never been any intention to analyse their DNA for criminal identification though.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Paul, l suspect we do not have similar outlooks in many ways, but I am glad to hear that. Goff is an authoritarian. He can be as right-on as he likes on other heads, but I am convinced that he would have dobbed his parents in in a cultural revolution.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Robyn: you're in Raglan? Then I recommend a trip down to the heads - do not swim, you will die - and a meditation on the eternal verities. We'll be dead, there will be undertow. I could do with some surf right now.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Paul: I am thinking now about joining a political party, for the first time in several years. I can tell you now that no party led by Goff will ever get my vote, let alone my labour, ever ever ever. Lyndon was worrying about the Nats taking dna samples from people who had not been convicted - Goff would be right behind that. He cannot be trusted to look after my freedom, and I'll be stockpiling ammunition before I work for his election to PM.

Our main strengths as a nation are food production and scenery

The problem wasn't that he said that, the problem is that he's proud of it.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Unsurprisingly underwhelming, uninspiring and smug. He ain't no Obama.

It's the Flight of the Concords modest PM speech. He captured it perfectly, except it's for real.

Sacha: ta. I've met enough right-wing people in NZ to know to that they aren't bad, or even stupid - I just don't want them in charge. If they can make me doubt that by doing great things, that would be neat.

I'm just not a very good hater, except for Winston Peters, because I am a harsh hater of haters.

    Key's speech.

I'm gonna puke. It's not the alcohol, it's the cliches.

    *blurk*

See, if it was alcohol, I'd feel better now.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

there must have been huge Labour tactical voting to get Winston First up to 4.3%

God, I hope not. This was always the nightmare scenario for Labour - not quite reaching the threshold, but Peters losing Tauranga, and thus redistributing the NZF votes. The best scenario was a crushing NZF defeat with voters defecting left AND Peters losing. Big failure of nerve in not cutting him loose. Peters is the big reason I didn't vote for them tonight, and it looks like a big contributor to their imminent loss.

Apple syrup, feijoa vodka, lime and soda. It's what left apart from the good stuff. And I'm not wasting the good stuff this evening.

Prediction: TV3 commentators talking about a coalition with the Maori Party are in bleeding-heart liberal fantasy-land. Act have nowhere to go, Dunne is also a remora, and the Maori Party will want big concessions.

Also, if you voted Green in Ohariu, I hate you. Just for this evening, anyway.
