  • Hard News: Veitch,

I withdraw the last part of the above statement. I can't claim to know the why or what. I do wish that someone would show some sense, however.

Oh shit, Phillip. Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but does any editor in this country actually exercise editorial judgementany more?

    No.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

He's a poor human being, but still a human being, and speculating over whether he really mean to kill himself, or sneering because he failed to do a good job of it is not classy.

Absolutely. I don't want to speculate on anyone's mental state, only to hope that they're getting the help they need.

There is a huge difference between that and using leaked 'suicide attempts' as a PR strategy to make it look like the other is a vindictive person who has destroyed the life of the other - if that was to be the case I would have no sympathy.

    Update
His representatives, who phone TV3 with the news just in time to make it breaking news at the top of the 6pm bulletin and just when the Sunday papers are thinking about their front pages.

God, if that is true, the man should burn in hell.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Sadly, if I suspect if the injury was less obvious than a broken back, the smears and supporters would have even more bite.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Imagine if that information was somehow "leaked" to the Sunday papers, in the most unflattering way possible.

I wonder if the papers are going to act as his PR machines, given the reaction so far.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

After seeing that a man got 180 hours for stealing cheese, I decide to have a look (site:.nz "300 hours" "community service") what others did to get the same sentence.

Quitting NZ and carrying on a business while insolvent.

Stealing a pre-production copy of Sione's Wedding (note, Robbery, this is not an invitation to talk about copyright)

Driving with a blood alcohol of 739mcg/L

    Conspiracy to defraud

    Poaching mullet commercially

Not passing on employee PAYE to IRD

These are the kinds of things that normally attract 300 hours of community service.

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

It appears that Mr Hide talked to at least some of them. Thus far there is no evidence that he actually listened to them however.

Grrrr. They're stealing my Manukau, to be subsumed as the southern suburbs and not much else.

Given who has been involved and cheerleading so far, I would surprised if ACT and those on the far right of National haven't been setting the agenda.

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

do you really think anything is going to satisfy the likes of Penny Bright or Hone Harawira?

Nothing but a socialist revolution would satisfy Penny Bright. Even then I think she'd be getting thrown out of meetings and being sent to the gulag. Harawira on the other hand strikes me as quite reasonable, and tolerant of compromises that enhance (rather than reduce) the positions he strives for.

You are however joking about block voting leading to democratic outcomes, right? The overseas experience has been wild swings, independents and minority viewpoints excluded, and elected dictatorships. Hardly a compelling track record.

  • Hard News: Some Monday Things,

I heard it, and I thought the same thing you did. Tolley didn't seem to know anything.

Tolley was the incoming Minister of Tertiary Education who had to ask her officials "what is a vice-chancellor?".

This morning I'm going to ask my first year students, who have been at university for 6 weeks, if they know what a vice-chancellor is. I'll bet they do better than the Minister.

Kapka Kassabova - The unbearable lightness of being English

The link didn't go through, but I have to say that Kassabova is a national treasure, or at least should be. She's in London now, I think?
