  • Hard News: Nobody wanted #EQNZ for Christmas, in reply to Joe Wylie,

Seems the "town clerk" meme is catching on too. Hope it spreads to other councils.

Do council CEOs get performance reviews? Would they be OIA-able?

Not sure. It might be withheld for privacy reasons.

Oh come on. Yes technically that might happen, in practice?

As someone else mentioned, the BCCI did this.

  • Hard News: The Mega Conspiracy, in reply to Dylan Reeve,

The activities of MegaUpload are much more akin to safe deposit boxes, or storage lockers.

From the public usage perspective, I agree. But that's not what the alleged crime is about. It's as if MU was going through those lockers and making money of showing their contents to other people.

It would be fascinating to find out what percentage of MU’s business was infringing. I certainly know plenty of people who used it legitimately.

It would, indeed. Consensus among some people I know (some of whom use MU and other sites for both purposes) is that the ratio legitimate:infringing would be very low (something like 1:500 was one estimate, which was promptly laughed at by the others present). It would be interesting to see an audit of files, but I doubt that will happen.

The bank remains closed until the case comes to court?

If the person accused of committing crime is the one who owns the bank, quite possibly.

Youtube/Google are putting a few bucks in too. Worth a read, if this is an area that interests you.

That is interesting. Certainly niche has been the way to go for some time in a number of industries - as long as the niche is big enough to make it sustainable. In physical terms, NZ has always suffered from scale issues, but when the world is your potential audience...

    What Geoff said.

In an ideal world, where all viewpoints are given equal weight, there might be value in commercial lobbying but that's not how the world works. Consequently, commercial interests tend to out weigh private interests or even national interests. Mostly, they preclude evidence-based policy-making as well, though not as badly as in the US. Yet.

The thing about Sky (and the other entities we tend to regard as ratbags in this area) is that they don't have to behave corruptly to get the job done. They pay people to liaise with the government officials and ministers and that may be their entire job. Simply by being always available to talk on these matters makes them the authoritative voice, as far as the government is concerned. We 'amateurs', who work on this stuff in-between the day job, raising families, protesting against motorways, looking after aged relatives etc, can only front up when there's something worth the effort, like a Select Committee review of legislation. The 'trusted advisors' make themselves available to help craft the legislation.

Not sure what you mean about Igloo. Care to elucidate?
