  • Up Front: The Up-Front Guides: The…, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

    Nice work,

Not really, because it allows Bob McCoskrie to be quoted thusly in the Herald:

"You always hope you can have a robust debate about ideas, and show respect for each other but when you're trying to take out each other's website it kind of suggests that you're not going to get a good debate, so that's disappointing."

And all of a sudden he looks fair and reasonable and the victim of bullying.

Now, I don't for a second believe that his idea of robust debate involves fairness or rationality, but whatever, he's entitled to express his views, no matter how obnoxious, and this DOS attack is no different from shouting him down. Doesn't really help.

  • Capture: The Night Time Is The Right Time, in reply to Nora Leggs,

Nice rain, not like what we've been getting up here. But was Stanley Kubrick a prophet? Because that looks really quite 2001: A Space Odyssey. I half expect the next pic to be of John Banks throwing sticks in the air.

  • Field Theory: And they're off!,

As for crap coverage, I was watching China vs South Korea women's hockey last night. At a random point in the middle of play half way through the second half of a game I was thoroughly enjoying, CCTV5 played a few ads then switched to diving. I wish I could say this was the first time CCTV5 had down this kind of thing, but no, in the midst of a very exciting women's volleyball final between China and Russia they suddenly switched to some shooting match because a Chinese guy stood to get gold there, too.

So I'm wondering if it's possible to get decent coverage anywhere. At least, without paying an arm, a leg and your left kidney.

  • Capture: Cats Love Cameras,

    Attachment Attachment

I'm not a great fan of cats, and have no idea if this particular cat likes cameras or not, but I was quite interested in how much this cat likes furrows.

  • Capture: The Night Time Is The Right Time, in reply to Lilith __,

isn’t “noise wall” a bit of a misnomer

Depends which side your on. The ones around Beijing seem to work by bouncing the noise back at the road, making them definitely "noise walls" on that side. It would be cool (because I woke up far too early and am still slowly caffeinating) if the wall could take all that noise energy and turn it into a pretty light show on the quiet side. Then it would be a wall of silent sci-fi awesomeness.

  • Capture: The Night Time Is The Right Time,

Way off topic, sorry, but didn't somebody about these parts post a snap or two of this project in its earlier stages?

  • Busytown: “Glory! Glory! There’s the salt!”, in reply to Carol Stewart,

That one sounds a bit like an entry on the geological timescale.

Perfectly appropriate as an adjective then.

Mahyem certainly gets my vote for the name of the universe Margaret Mahy created.

  • Muse: OPEN HOUSE: Margaret Mahy, The…,

It's odd, I can't remember any of Margaret Mahy's stories in particular, and I'm sure she did visit every primary school I attended, but my life has been so nomadic I'm just as sure her visits coincided with me having already moved somewhere else, but I do remember the sheer joy of reading her books. Her passing has left a pretty big hole in the world.

But I'm with Lilith. Good writers achieve a certain immortality in their works.

Jackson, I think Geoff's idea of an NZ cinema theme should get the priority, but I'd happily scrape together a few photos when I get back to Beijing next week.

    Nora,

A harsh brew – tannin overload.

That's what gets me going in the morning, especially in the summer when coffee makes me feel like spontaneously combusting.
