...but you’re ignoring the old maxim ’the enemy of my enemy etc”.

if you’re a pissed off and impoverished *anyone* with a grunge against colonialist like the NZL Crown or the US of A, seeing someone like OBL sticking it to The Man will raise a cheer.

I thought that was the point that was being made by some against Hone - that he was making just this kind of infantile comparison.

Well, the tāngata whenua of this place are the Māori. No idea what these “Maori” people keep writing about, though. It’s a common word and I’ve come to think that it means the writer doesn’t know how to spell key words in one of the country’s official languages.

That would include the person you were originally agreeing with, Ewan Morris.

However the right to free speech is not absolute. It is abridged (for good reason) by strictures on defamation and libel,

To be a bit pedantic, libel is a subset of defamation. It would be more correct to say “libel and slander” I think. (And no, it ain’t for good reason - “obscenity laws” even less so.)

…and the famous requirement that you abstain from yelling fire in a crowded theatre.

That’s not a freedom of speech issue. (And one should always yell ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre if the theatre is on fire.)

Call me a skeptic but how do we know Bin Laden is dead –

Apparently Donald Trump is calling for his death certificate.

(and who can blame an American for feeling some degree of satisfaction at this news)

    Idiot/savant can, that’s who.

Those taking satisfaction in it, are vengeful sadists, with the ethics of kitten-strangling psychopaths who kill for pleasure.

  • Hard News: Any excuse for a party, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

Please, please reassure me that there will be other people here NOT watching. Just when I thought PAS might be a royal wedding-free zone.

I wasn’t intending to watch it myself, but after the Breakers game I switched over to 3 for a “quick look” that ended up lasting till the end of coverage. From a production and staging point of view it was very well done. The pageantry made for good spectacle, they made the most of a huge range of camera angles, and the Abbey looked great, as did London in general. And those crowd scenes were quite impressive.

I was only interested the visuals, so I had the whole thing on mute. I put Active 88.6FM on (techno/dance music), drank beer and followed the twitter feed. That’s the way to watch a royal wedding. Just slightly surreal.

Man, between this, Wallace’s pending announcement about Back Benches, and Doctor Who, this week's been all about…

A standard literary device for centuries - often easier for an audience to hear about their culture if the tale is painted as being about somewhere else.

Yes, although I think that part of the point Craig was making here was that this allegorical or satirical aspect shouldn’t be used to defensively deny that such and such a piece of work is not really "genre", or fantastical or what have you. Gulliver’s Travels is satire, but it’s also fantasy.
