  • Envirologue: Choose Wisely, Grasshopper:…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

BUT the problem was identified before the recent deaths. It was noted by DHBs and some media. It was the reason the housing WoF bill was introduced to parliament.

The long-standing Tenancy Protection Association in Christchurch, headed by Helen Gatonyi, has been asking successive governments for a rental WoF for over 20 years. http://www.tpa.org.nz/

…and Rodney Hide withdraws his support for the co-leader of the Green Party. Well that’s ruined everything…

That column is a dog's dinner.

It’s only Thursday ffs, he gave Key arseholes at question time on Tuesday, give the guy a chance.

(Or are you suggesting he needs to call a NATO air strike on Michelle Boag to keep the Greens relevant?)

Shaw has had a fine first week as leader, with even the NZ Herald editorial telling the PM to grow up and share his sandpit.
    And lol.

  • Envirologue: Choose Wisely, Grasshopper:…, in reply to Amanda Wreckonwith,

Really? TBH I’m pretty much over this tired approach to politics.
I would hope that James will talk to every member of parliament about climate change.
The Green Party appear to have the most sensible policy response to the problems facing us. The challenge will be to get as many on board as possible. Keep talking I say.

Quite. If we are all drowned rats on a sinking dairy farm, no social justice policies will come into play. I've voted Green for 25 years (with the occasional strategic-voting lapse), and that's because it is the only environment-focused party in this short-sighted country. Our response to the environmental challenges ahead will be the basis of determining our daily lives and those of our children and grandchildren.

I would much rather the Greens had a loud voice in this process of decision-making -- which is happening now -- than it be decided alone by a National Party being pushed to the far right.

The leadership contest was interesting: four very good candidates, who will still be in the party and contributing in a big way. To me James Shaw was elected because he is a stand-out in the qualities needed to keep the party relevant in a testing time when an influential Green Party is needed more than ever.

My teenagers are Shaw supporters: they and their friends have no interest in the old left/right smokestack politics. They aspire to be solar-powered capitalists who nurture the planet and its people.

  • Hard News: Campbell Live: A Disturbance…, in reply to Robert Fox,

Campbell Live's coverage of post quake Christchurch has ventured beyond anywhere TVNZ and to its shame the Press are proactively willing to tread. Where Campbell live led other media grudgingly had to follow.Thousands of people in Christchurch have been treated appallingly by the the government through EQC, and the Insurance companies and its only through Campbell Live's advocacy that the rest of NZ have been able to get an idea of how their fellow citizens have been treated. While I am eternally grateful for this I am also fearful of what might happen here now with the potential dimming of the National TV lights in Christchurch.

    +1

Campbell Live has been a lifesaver since last year's floods.

(I now go to the NZ Herald to read more than surface analysis of big Chch stories. Sad eh.)

I'd forgotten that tax: it was like a declaration of war on the the young and the those with any artistic sensibility in the racing, racism and beer years.

both sites I think are land that the council bought when it bailed out David Henderson –

Yep. The pre-quake Parker council. Right now they need to get rid of some land so it produces rates income rather than being a maintenance cost.

    · The Residential Demonstration project won’t go ahead,

I missed that (so much being decided and undecided that it is easy to not know about huge chunks of the city). That is a shame: it looked like an interesting starting point. Here's a link to the original plan

  • Hard News: #GE2015: Proper Mad, in reply to Russell Brown,

    Fark.

The Telegraph’s editor sends every one of its a readers an email beseeching them to vote Conservative. This is getting embarrassing now.

Tories' internal polls on the UK Wednesday must have shown they were in trouble. Desperate. One picture of Cameron exiting the polling station shows him looking strung out to the max.
