It’s really hard work to think past a made-up and photographed celebrity on the side of a bus-shelter

Even harder thinking past a made up and well presented ideology . I think the image thing is the tip of the iceberg in terms of the attempts to manipulate our minds.

Not quite all ... the New York tabloids followed the Sun's lead pretty closely too.

And like so such of the Pistorious porn, the most interesting thing is what’s not there: Reeva Steenkamp – not “Pistorious’ girlfriend.” You know, the woman that “superman gunman” shot to death.

    +1 Craig
Yeah what the hell is happening when the (alleged) murderer gets all the media space including glossy , sexy even, pics . Reeva Steenkamp was brutally murdered in her own home, cowering in her bathroom.
I reckon he's got one hell of a PR machine behind him and the media have been suckered by it.

    sponsorship

Yeah I guess, but depends which way the power goes. Trad sponsorship deals give a lot of power and control to the sponsors but what if this was reversed and the content creator had all the power?

I’ve often wondered how a site like this one makes it coin, sounds like it doesn’t…. ok so adblock now disabled for p/address will be clicking away

There is something in this idea. Valuing a web site so much you deliberately click on the ads knowing this simple action will support the site. There is a altruism in this thinking I really like. I wonder if matching this with the site owners carefully choosing which ads they run, in fact asking their user community which ads they want to see. So the ads offer at least some utility to the users. Hey the fact is we all buy shit , and need to find out where to get it etc . Could there be a happy medium here?

I think there’s a place for thoughtful human-curated advertising. You just don’t often see it.

Jarrod do you have any examples , links . I think its an interesting side topic .

When we started taking advertising, I really thought that we’d get a lot more bFM -level advertising – ads from people who were part of the same communities as the readership – but that has never really happened

Whoa - I am part of this community and purchased a banner ad on PA . Admittedly only a grand's worth. Mind you, bugger all people clicked through on it .
    Wasn't a very flash ad though .

  • Speaker: Pipes: Understanding Hackers,

Years ago I contracted a coder who had worked on a big bank system who told me a story.
The bank was notorious for messing around with contractor payments so he planted a wee "bomb" in the code that he could activate if his invoice wasn't paid. It simply flashed abusive messages up on user screens.
He didn't get paid, the bank got the "message" and paid him fast, he deactivated the "bomb"
I wonder how much of that happens , used to be called Easter eggs.

    Wow Rich , excellent paranoia.
I'd wondered the same thing. What about Kaspersky and rumours he has been hacking/cracking for the Russian military - sorry can't find the link right now.

Why don't the Labour party adopt the same co-leader set up as Maori and Greens?
Male/Female co-leaders ...perhaps that would take the sting out of the "one leader to rule them all " dynamic.

I suspect they are so stuck in the last century they may never have considered the idea.

Still its interesting to speculate who the happy couple might be.
David Shearer / Jacinda Ardern ?
    David Cunliffe/ Lianne Dalziel ?
