Hard News: The non-binary council, in reply to
Online voting worked well for the census. I think we could have both online and postal.
I suspect ( in Auckland) many people didn’t vote because they considered it a foregone conclusion. A good number of people ( more than 20,000) voted for John Minto & Penny Bright ( perhaps an obvious protest vote.) And then there were these votes that didn’t help anyone.

There is a paragraph in the wiki entry for Sleeping Dogs
Sleeping Dogs ( NZ movie from '77) which lends credence to the idea that was the reference intended by Mike Dow."The riot scenes in which police with batons and shields beat back protestors closely mirrored actions of police and protestors four years later during the 1981 South African National Rugby team - the Springboks' - tour in New Zealand, which sparked anti-apartheid protests."

I remember being in Queen St on the day at the concert. I could see the combination of alcohol & heavy handed policing was not going to work and so like many others ( I think) I legged it out of there before it got messy.
It wasn’t so easy for those in the square though and as I had been on Queen St much easier to slip away. Hard to believe it happened all these years later.
And great to see all the photos in the story. A bit of time travel to see those youthful pics of Andrew Boak and you.

I wonder if this RNZ interview might be useful. From US government shutdown Originally aired on Nine To Noon, Wednesday 2 October 2013
What I did note is that although there have been previous shutdowns - none like this - even though it was possible.
Todd Schoenberger, New York-based market analyst on the implications of the US government shutdown.

Lets hope Ella / Lorde stays grounded through all of this.
On the HAIM ? thing - there is a full concert on iTunes Festival which I watched a bit of. I liked the idea of it ( and the good news is no Shania Twain ness) but after a few tracks I switched it off as there is also a Pixies concert on there too.

It would be better if Clare gets another shot at the IT sector. I rather liked her enthusiasm. I can see Kris Faafoi has a associate role there but so does she along with Open Government.
Civil Defence and Emergency Management
Open Government
Associate Regional Development
Associate ICT
Associate Economic Development (Procurement)Andrew Little for Labour seems like an obvious choice. Justice less obvious.

What a wonderful thread. I believe there is a famous quote somewhere like this "Talking / writing about music is like dancing about architecture" sometimes credited to Elvis Costello but you get the idea.
Thanks for all the great music clips in here. One of my fave ever dance scenes on film is from Hal Hartley's "Simple Men" movie and features a Sonic Youth song.

What you can expect to see in the next six months is on-demand IPTV presented as a channel on Freeview – although it won’t actually be delivered via the DTT broadcast.
Because I don't have UFB access at home yet I'd like my freeview to get past the data cap scenario and so a digital channel would be better
-
And you have to think when more of us have unlimited cap UFB connections TV will be more internet driven than by broadcasters.
I’ve always thought Sky programmers get their clips from the $5 bin and I can programme my own channels so that is what I do.
One of my brothers ( in Cairns – not exactly the centre of the universe) has an uncapped Telstra connection and 99% of his TV viewing is online & has been for about 4 years now.
here is a link that I spotted on some of the implications
Why TV everywhere will kill what’s best about TV -

Thanks Russell,
Part of that is business model & partly not understanding that a network expands & amplifies – not based on scarcity anymore.
And all of these people have been going to conferences about convergence since about ’93. I’m mashing up all kinds of educational content using video ( served off ETV) and various s/w learning systems including electronic textbook content.
Its not just broadcasters who have to deal with convergence – its all universities as well…
