  • Field Theory: I suppose you can call it…,

Possibly the only sport where the uniform is in the name.

That excludes teams named for their uniforms (red sox etc.). And they don't wear polos to play polo do they?

Surely there's something else ... at the very least a 'sport' with nude in its name?

  • Cracker: History Repeating,

You haven't thought to make this one of those filler things on TVNZ6, have you (like Meet the Locals)? Or if you have, has someone thought to agree with you?

A couple of nights a week this would be an interesting thing to look out for. And if you're looking out for things, I'd be really interested in seeing the other animated ads Hanna-Barbera did for Muldoon. We've all seen the Dancing Cossacks Superannuation as (or could see it if we wanted), but I've only ever seen very brief snippets of what appeared to be an anti-Pacific immigration ad.

  • Field Theory: No draught in here,

And I thought it was called draught beer when it was served from a tap. Actually, I'm reasonably confident of that. Tui should be shouting this from the roof tops. Maybe they are, and my roof is just a little too far from theirs for me to hear them...

The young lady I spoke to didn't know what a hectolitre was, neither did I, neither did Mike, Jed or the other guy behind the bar. She tried to explain it thusly: "You know a hectare? It's like that but in litres".

Of course then you have to know that an "are" is a unit of measurement. A hectare (10,000 sq m) is 100 ares (100 sq m). The are isn't a very common unit with which area is measured.

  • Hard News: Dead Elephant Frenzy,

Am I the only person who is slightly more worried about Bob McCoskrie's functional innumeracy (or his Tourette-like compulsion to make shit up) than where Focus on the Family gets its money from?

    Yes?

  • Field Theory: Testosterone and the…,

I'm willing to bet that Martina Hingis won two doubles grand slams and Kournikova was also there

And if at the end of 1999 Martina Hingis had been the WTA no.1 ranked womens doubles player I might be more inclined toward this argument =)

Kournikova has always been a doubles specialist ... why youse all hatin' on her?

  • Field Theory: Testosterone and the…,

For example Kournikova sucked really badly, but could earn more in a tournament than the eventual winner just for drawing in crowds.

She didn't suck that badly: she reached #8 in the world singles rankings and was several times #1 in doubles partnerships.

    And won two grand slams.

And as Lucy says, if she *is* intersex, is she unable to compete with anyone?

Has anyone suggested that if she's ineligible to compete against women she'd also be ineligible to compete against men?

  • Legal Beagle: The Inexorable Advance,

There seem to be deliberate obstacles to the opt-out process but this should only be a matter of oversight, as to who this oversight falls to could be open to debate but I do not think that body should be parliament. It is, surely, a matter for chancery I would have thought.

No-one is suggesting that people wanting to opt-out should apply to Parliament. And, of course, for your idea that students should instead apply through the University Chancery to take effect, would require Parliament to amend the law.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

Much respect to John Key. It would have been very easy for him to take the 'popular' route on this, especially with that member's bill landing on his table. For the first time in ages, a politician has gone with the facts instead of... well, acting like a politician.

Come on. This isn't an incredibly rare event. Bill English came out not all that long ago and said they weren't going to be cutting taxes. He even suggested they might raise some taxes. etc.
