Congratulations, Graham. That's fantastic, and you thoroughly deserve it.

Never heard of 'em - bit cheesy, but then I like Elton John, so who am I to talk?

You know, I don't know much about bfm nowadays. In the old days, pre 1986 when it was radio b, I knew quite alot of the people who worked there. Marcus was a friend. Mikey Havoc, I have never met, but I have always liked him. I suspect he's a bit like crumpet to women of my age - there are a few of us who find him delightful. But you're right, Damian. Student radio used to be experimental, colourful, interesting, broadcasting for the peeps by the peeps. Perhaps Mikey's time has come. I won't be listening anymore when Mikey goes, but then me and my cougar friends aren't the demographic, are we?

Besides, for most people growing up in the punk and post punk eras, their defining music was Pink Floyd and Dire Straits..y'know the people who now fill the National Party and scribble vicious little diatribes on KiwiBlog :)
Me, I blame Supertramp. And Smokie. And Queen. Even Sailor, a little bit.
Pink Floyd, never cared for it much. Dire Straits - love, love, love. And Supertramp. And Hello Sailor. Elton John is my favourite artist - always has been, always will be. I even went through a very long phrase of loving Rod Stewart. MOR music I love. Conservative politics, and Kiwiblog, not so much.

I realise I'm a dinosaur, Ben, but my concerns are very much about the way that we all use our leisure time, now. So few people seem to be able to relax, and just be. It's something I try to teach my kids about. Because children tend to get bored if there's nothing to do, and I spend quite a bit of my time encouraging children to either 1) find a way to amuse themselves or in eduspeak drive their own learning and 2) sitting/lying quietly, just being and thinking. People these day I find have a propensity to run around madly, usually in the weekends, trying to cram everything in. And by everything, for some people, this means walking around their local mall, window shopping and buying a couple of things every now and then. So yes, I welcome days that everything is shut, and when moving a bit slower is enforced.
And Hilary, you are quite rignt, people did go for Sunday drives back when, but nowadays when there are more people on the road, and the people that are on the road are mannerless twats, it's so much more annoying. -
I don't think we need to become that place.
I sincerely hope we never do. But. I see it moving that way, more and more, which makes me want to stay home, more and more.

I like shops being shut, I like everything being shut. But then, I remember when weekends were weekends, and people stayed at home and didn't fuck about DRIVING AROUND AIMLESSLY or even, god forbid, SHOPPING FOR A HOBBY. Beats the shit out of me why everything has to stay open all the time. It just means there are more people around to give me the shits. Curmudgeonly, me?
