  • Hard News: Some reprehensible bullshit, in reply to Matt Fairhurst,

    But it *is* a door.

    It's also slightly less utilitarian.

  • Hard News: Some reprehensible bullshit, in reply to Jim Cathcart,

So yes, if I were an adviser to the mayoral office, I would have recommended something more utilitarian, like a door.

Nah, you'd have saved it up and then sold it to the Herald. It's what a "second-rate, creepy mayor like Brown" deserves, right?

Basically your point is that we have some kind of minor comms fail, which is somehow unforgivable, whether or not the story is a beat up.

To some extent you're right, we have an epic comms fail called the Herald on Sunday.

  • Hard News: Some reprehensible bullshit,

To really take the thread to the record, the dungeon needs to also have a massive stash of pirated movies, especially porno.

Also, it has to have a discreet entrance. What use is a sex dungeon if you have to enter it through the front door of the Mayor's office? Ideally, it has a passage through to an underground lockup car park, just long enough for a stretch limo.

  • Hard News: Park Life, in reply to Glenn Pearce,

If the picture Russell gave in the picture is accurate then it's mostly what was the back-9 of the original course, which included the longest holes, from memory.

  • Hard News: Park Life, in reply to Peter Haynes,

Good, but far from most popular.

Is it the most popular in Auckland, though?

But, as I said, noone keeps figures on the number of individual people playing on the course (or any other course as far as I know).

Presumably they do keep figures on the play of individual members, though, since most members lodge their play cards into databases for handicap calculations. And also they charge different prices, for the most part, to non-members, so their accounting will have different codes for the different tickets sold.

But yes, I can see that it's prohibitively difficult to keep track of non-member total numbers. Which is an important part of policy making decisions.

  • Hard News: Park Life, in reply to Peter Haynes,

So 250 is the bottom number and 20,000 probably the top number.

LOL, that's quite a range. Presumably the course itself could give better numbers. Have they been forthcoming?

The solution is just like housing…. density. Improve existing facilitites and optimise their use.

But making it a facility used by a lot more people IS improving it and optimizing its use.

I’m interested in the gender part of this discussion.

The report Russell linked to has stats...p18 has a table with demographic data. Interesting stuff. 24% of golfers are women. Mind you, I've no idea how that compares to rugby.

  • Hard News: Park Life, in reply to Russell Brown,

I figured they’d found some other way of assessing it.

I'd be amazed if it was anywhere near as low as 9%. It's a really busy course, as courses go.

I'd also have somewhat mixed feelings about it disappearing. I have happy memories of the place, it was where I learned golf. But soberly weighing the public good is a different thing. I've never been to a single concert a Western Springs, nor ever played rugby, but many, many more people have so it's way up the food chain for usage of public space.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Joe Wylie,

Key’s crass invoking of the old death cult aspect of ANZAC is an attempt to subvert what independence we have left.

Agreed. I shouldn't feel like this, but I find it especially galling coming from someone whose family were not even NZers at the time of Gallipoli, that they invoke the memory of my ancestors for such crude political gain.
