  • Hard News: Crossing the line into idle bigotry,

Hapless opinion pieces by silly old men are a price we pay for a free press

The paper (which is probably being run by people that find this crap as puke inducing as I do) could just spike all the racist and bigoted articles as they appear.

That they don't is significant - it's their *job* to scare us with the "other" - that can be Muslims, beneficiaries or gangs, but our rulers need some sort of flow of othering stories to keep people scared and compliant.

That's an awesome book - I believe I heard of it from Derek Lowe's "things I won't work with" blog series.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Hyper than the rest,

    not available in my territory

Now I've been working on the fringes of publishing, I'm kinda understanding the reason. Those artists will all have record/publishing deals that segment by territory, with overseas rights having been licensed elsewhere. To make the compilation available, the record company has to square away all the rights. If they want to do it for NZ, that means someone's got to go through all the contracts, contact management and licensees and generally muck around, all for a few thousand dollars of revenue (at a high estimate, I think). Not viable.

Maybe as time goes on, most artists will sign global deals (or maybe not - possibly one makes more money in e.g. Japan if handled by a local company).

I don't see a way of cutting this knot (apart from moving to acceptance of file sharing and a levy system).

In other upcoming elections, can I predict that Xi Jinping will win Shangdong and thus become leader of China for the next ten years.

White men are about 36% of Americans - is voter participation so skewed that they form a majority of voters?

  • Hard News: The Big 2012 US Election PAS Thread, in reply to Joe Wylie,

I was almost hoping Romney might win, the reason being that when (as is likely) a major setback occurs to the US, such as a banking crash, the doctrinaire craziness of the right would be exposed.

(A situation where Romney refused a bailout, resulting in the collapse of the retail banking system for several weeks, food riots, a dollar freefall, etc). That might convince the USians that they're doing it wrong (it might even drive the less-insane states into secession, seeing themselves as better off as a small country than part of a huge failed state. See Estonia).

Ike had trouble from the right at the time. The only reason he didn't get more was his unassailable past as the USA's leading WW2 general.
